“I wasn’t expecting your call,” I feel a little guilty that I haven’t called her these past few days, but I’ve been so preoccupied with Lev.

“How have you been, dear? I’ve been trying to reach you, but it has been impossible.” There’s an edge to her voice.

“I’m sorry about that,” I tell her. “Things got… busy. Is there a problem?”

“Actually, I have good news,” she says.

“Good news?” I ask.

“Yes, Aurora. Remember what we talked about? I’ve set the plans in motion. All I need from you are a few details.”

I freeze.

Oh fuck!

She’s still going through with it.

“About that. I…,” I start to say, but she cuts in.

“Aurora, listen to me, we don’t have much time,” her words come out in a rush. “Once you’re back from Miami, Ivanov is going to go to an important auction. I just need you to wait for my instructions,” she says.

“Wait, what instructions? And how do you know we’re in Miami?” I ask. Too much of this conversation doesn’t make sense, but I’m afraid that if I refuse to cooperate, she’ll back off completely and I’ll never know what she’s up to.

“I’ll tell you later, in person, when the time is ready. Trust me, dear, everything will be okay.”

What the hell?

I don’t like any of this. The alarm bells in my head are going off, screaming danger. I know I don’t want to be a part of this, but I have to find out what this is about and what she’s planning. I’m about to play innocent and ask her some more questions when the door opens and Lev walks in.

“Okay, Aunt Diana, I’ll extend your greetings,” I say before quickly ending the call.

Holy shit!

“That was my aunt,” I say, forcing a smile. My words come out in a rush and I’m sure Lev can see that something’s wrong.

Shit.

Shit.

What do I do?

Lev’s expression remains unreadable as he sits down next to me. I keep my expression bright as I turn to face him.

“You and your aunt must be very close,” he says as he stares at me intently.

“We are,” I reply, unable to look him in the eye. “How was your work meeting?” I ask him.

“Good. We’ll be leaving tomorrow morning,” he says. My mind drifts to my mother’s words. Holy shit, she was right about everything. But how does she know?

“So soon?” I know I sound dejected, but I can’t help myself.

“I have business to take care of,” Lev says. I know he is referring to the auction but I can’t give any indication that I know about it. He’d be suspicious. Hell, I’m suspicious! How does my mother know about this stuff?

“Oh,” I whisper, my mind racing. None of this is panning out well. Whatever she’s planning, I need to stop it. I can’t let her cause Lev any harm.

“It’s good you’re close to your aunt,” Lev is saying, bringing the subject back. “Everyone needs family… someone who cares. Someone to trust.”

Oh, God.
