“Which is?” His eyebrow lifts. I know he knows what I’m about to say, but he loves hearing it as much as I do.

“I love you, Lev,” I tell him, and he grins.

“I love you more,Solshinko. You will always be my sunshine.” His words make my heart warm. In those early days after the accident, he tried endlessly to convince me he’d always loved me. That one word makes it all real for me. He’d called me his sunshine at our very first meeting – I just hadn’t known it.

He’s gone quiet now, watching me intently.

“What’s up, tough guy?” I keep my tone light because in moments like this it’s hard not to sink into those deep eyes. He cups my cheek.

“Thank you,” he says. “Thank you for giving my life meaning. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

It’s not the first time he’s said this to me. He does it all the time, but the intensity never subsides. Sometimes it still feels like we got married yesterday.

And I’m glad. I’m glad I risked my heart on this man. I’m glad we fought the odds, and I’m glad our children aren’t going to grow up in an environment where care was absent like it was for us. Teaching them about love is going to be so easy with this man beside me.

“I will love you always,” I tell Lev.

“Always?” he says softly. “Solshinko,I think I’ll need more time.”

THE END
