How on Earth does he always look good enough to eat?

He is wearing a black turtleneck and black jeans, plastered to his body like a second skin. I force myself to look him in the eye rather than gawk at him. I’m taken aback when he smiles at me again.

Where is the questioning?

The rage?

The punishment?

Instead, he’s silent as he prowls toward me. My breath hisses out when he stops in front of me and I stare directly at his chest. His hand snaps out and cups my jaw, and I briefly close my eyes to savor the feeling of his touch on my skin.

He slowly raises my head until we stare into each other’s eyes. He gives me an unexplainable look for a moment before his lips quirk up.

“Always so beautiful,” he whispers.

God, I could say the same about him. Except right now, I’m waiting for him to explode.

Nothing happens. We merely stand staring at each other for what feels like an eternity.

“I—” I try to explain again.

“Shhh,” Lev murmurs as he places one of his fingers on my lips. Without thinking, I flick out my tongue to touch the finger he holds to my lips. He sucks in a breath. I watch his eyes grow darker with what I now know as hunger. I want him to feel the need I’ve felt for him these past few days. I open my lips and suck his finger into my mouth, holding his gaze.

If anything, Lev’s eyes grow even darker. His lips slightly part as he gives me a smoldering look. My body responds as if he’s already touching me. My flesh tingles as I wait for that moment when we cross the edge of control and take what we want.

Suddenly, the moment is broken when someone knocks at the door. Lev steps away and shoves his hands in his pockets. Just that short moment of anticipation has left me teetering on edge. I ignore the wetness between my thighs and focus on the door opening.

I’m surprised to see one of Lev’s men enter the room. Lev doesn’t seem moved by it. Instead, he regards the man silently.

“Everything is ready, Boss,” the man says.

“Good. Wait for my next order,” Lev responds. He doesn’t look at me as the man leaves the room, though I find myself staring at the door as I try to figure out what they are talking about.

“We are leaving in fifteen. You might want to freshen up,” he says.

“Leaving?” I ask.

“We are going on a trip,” he says with a shrug. His hands remain in his pockets. I let myself imagine that he is trying to control himself around me. But there’s something taut in his stance that seems unfamiliar. Unless… I am suddenly hit by a thought that has me gasping for air and my heart racing.

Surely, he's not planning to kill you, Aurora!

“What trip are you talking about?” I ask as I retreat to the bed and sit on it. Somehow, putting distance between us seems like a good idea right now.

“Call it a mini vacation,” Lev says, and I stare at him, trying to make sense of his words.

What on Earth is he talking about?

After what Elena told me, a vacation should be the last thing on Lev’s mind. I wonder if this is all a trap. I give him a questioning look, trying to figure out what is going on in his head.

His blank expression makes it impossible to read him and my blood runs cold again. Suddenly, I find myself thinking of the man he shot in the restaurant that night we met.

You’re being paranoid, Aurora!

Surely, you’ve seen too many mafia movies!

“What are you going to do to me?” I ask as I clench my fist on the bedspread. Lev remains silent when I raise my head to stare at him.

He looks like his mind is far away.
