“Oh, it’s fair, I just can’t promise to give you the answers you need.”

It will have to do for now.

The attendant brings Zara her coffee and refills my cup. When she’s gone, I change tactics. “Was the person who referred you to Oliver at the club last night?”

She shakes her head but bites her lip.

“The truth, Zara.”

She sighs. “It is the truth. He definitely wasn’t there. But I saw at least two past clients. I’m not sure if they saw me or not. If they did, they might be able to place me in the room.”

“We’ll deal with that if it becomes a problem.”

I sense that she doesn’t want to talk anymore, so pick up my coffee and take a sip, then settle in for the last hour of our trip to Las Vegas.

For me, it feels like coming home. But as we get closer, Zara becomes tense. Something tells me she has a good reason for telling me she couldn’t go to Vegas, and I intend to find out what it is. I intend to find out a lot about Zara in the next twenty-four hours, whether she likes it or not.

Chapter 4

Zara

Whenwestepoffthe plane, a tall, tattooed man in a well-tailored suit is leaned against an SUV with his arm around a petite blond I instantly recognized as Skylar Cameron. She’s smiling up at the man with an adoring smile, and it makes me melt a little.

I don’t know that I’ll ever find it for myself, but I have a soft spot for sappy romance, and these two have it in spades.

Skylar steps forward with a huge smile on her face and offers me a hug. “You must be Zara. I recognize you. Weren’t you a guest of Kenneth Bretzger at a movie premier last year?”

I smile and nod, trying not to give too much away. She’s so observant, and while I like it, that could also spell trouble for me. “I was. That was a great after-party.”

Skylar throws a subtle glare at the tattooed man. “I wouldn’t know. I wasn’t able to attend the after-party.”

It seems like I’ve brought up a sore subject, so I turn to the man she’s with.

“And you must be Matteo. Thank you for picking us up.”

He doesn’t say anything, just nods and gives me a stare I can’t quite read. It’s like he’s sizing me up, trying to decide if he can trust me.

“Stop being rude and say hello, Matteo.”

He gives me a stiff smile. “No problem. Let’s get you and Luke settled.”

I’d nearly forgotten about Luke standing behind me. Almost, but not quite. He’s not an easily forgettable man.

He doesn’t say anything in greeting to the people picking us up, which I find odd. Especially if they’re business partners. I file that bit of information away and climb into the back of the SUV.

Skylar gets into the backseat with me, and Luke takes the front with Matteo, which surprises me.

“They apparently need to talk business for the ride, and Luke isn’t my favorite person anyway. Hope you don’t mind me keeping you company back here, Zara. That’s a beautiful name, by the way.”

I smile. “Thank you. And thanks for setting us up with a room. I admit I have little sense for what’s going on, but I’m glad to have a place to go after the long flight.”

Skylar smiles. “Don’t worry. I don’t have a clue what’s going on half the time either. It’s a great penthouse they’ve hooked you up with at the Sapphire. I think you’ll be comfortable.”

We make the drive from the private airfield to the Las Vegas strip in relative silence. Luke and Matteo are talking in the front, but they’re speaking quietly and must be using some sort of code, because the few words I can make out mean nothing to me.

“Are you dating Luke? Matteo didn’t tell me a lot.”

I chuckle. “I just met Luke less than twelve hours ago. It’s… complicated.”
