I nod. “Yeah. I want to show her around. I know it’s crazy, but she’s under my skin.”

“That could be dangerous, man. Especially if she is some kind of plant.”

He isn’t wrong. Zara Blaire has the potential to be a very dangerous woman. But I don’t care. If she’s going to be under my guard for the next couple of weeks, I’m going to explore this attraction to her and see if it’s at all reciprocal. She’s so strong and has her boundaries fully intact. And damn if it wouldn’t be fun to break her and maybe push those boundaries a bit.

I shift in my seat and adjust my belt; my pants have become uncomfortable.

“I’m going to go take care of Skylar before I go to work. But call if you need anything. I’ll poke around and see what I can find out from Novak.”

“Gross, man. I don’t want to hear about your sex life.”

He chuckles. “Just remember that if you ever get the urge to tell me about you and Zara. And don’t even try to deny it. I see the way you look at her.”

Since he’s right, I don’t say anything, just walk him to the door and wave goodbye.

When I’m alone in the living room, exhaustion hits me. Even after being awake for almost twenty-four hours, I didn’t sleep well last night because I couldn’t stop thinking about the dark-haired beauty in the other room. I consider going back to bed for a nap, but I know I won’t sleep.

Against my better judgment, I pull out my phone and call my dad. It’s almost afternoon in New York.

“Have you gotten any information out of Zara yet?”

“Just that she was paid to go on a date with Oliver. It was a blind date situation, so she’d only just met him for coffee that morning and they decided she would be a good fit to accompany him to the opening. Did you threaten him about bringing someone who didn’t fit in?”

“No. Why?”

“Zara said whoever told him to bring a suitable date was someone Oliver is afraid of. But she’s not naming names yet, so I’m still trying to figure everything out.”

“Get the information however you can. I don’t care if she’s a woman.”

I groan. “There’s no way I’m torturing her, Pop. That’s not how we do things in Las Vegas.”

Yes, we’ve taken that route, but it’s a last resort.

“We need some cash turned around quickly. If I get it to you today, how fast can you get money back into my bank account?”

I sigh. “Give me twelve hours to sort out a plan with our team. I’ll get you a date then.”

“Good.”

Money laundering across state lines was tricky business, but it’s also very lucrative for us and is the least violent way the four of us have found to survive.

“Has Oliver been charged yet?”

“No. They’re just holding him. It seems they don’t have enough evidence for the DA to charge.”

That was good, at least. “OK. I’m putting some of my own feelers out to see if I can figure out who did this. I’ll keep you informed.”

“You better. I need to go.”

The call ends before I can say anything else. That’s the way my dad is.

“Do you care if I go shopping?”

I turn to find Zara standing in the doorway of her bedroom, dressed and ready for the day.

“Not at all. Skylar’s security will be with you.”

“Can I get my phones back?”
