Chapter 28

Luke

“You’renotkeepingmelocked up in a goddamn limo all night.”

“You’re sure as hell not coming to the party in the shape you’re in,” Matteo growls. “There’s no telling if you’ll do something stupid when you see him.”

I stand toe to toe with the Italian mobster and glare at him. “For the last time, I’m not going to shoot Chuck Pratchett in the head. A bullet to the head is too easy for him.”

“Watch your fucking mouth. We’re at my place of employment, not the club. Who knows who could be listening.”

“Technically, no one, because I made sure of it,” Owen pipes up helpfully.

I turn and glare at him for good measure. “I’m better off inside. Tell him Owen.”

Owen holds up his hands and backs toward the door. “I hate to say it, but I agree with Matteo on this one, buddy. We’re on a fact-finding mission tonight, not a revenge campaign.”

It’s been two days since Zara left, and I haven’t heard from her. The only reason I know she landed safely is because the pilot kept me updated. I’ve got a friend in London who is going to find her and check-up on her periodically. Once she leaves London—if she leaves London—I’m not sure what I’ll do. She’s already disabled my tracking apps on her phones so I can’t keep watch over her that way. But I’ll find a way when it comes time.

For now, I’ve turned all my focus on finding out what the hell Chuck Pratchett is up to before I make him suffer for hurting Zara.

“If Pratchett sees three out of the four of us in that room, he’s going to get suspicious. It’s better for you to be outside with the ability to move us fast if we need it.”

“I hate it when you get fucking logical on me,” I mutter. “Fine. The limo it is.”

Matteo flashes me a grin. “Skylar hates it when I’m logical, too. So, you’re not alone.”

Owen stands and stretches. “I’ve got to run, boys. The outside security details I have to hand-hold for this thing are waiting downstairs for a briefing.”

As he walks out, I follow him and put a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll walk with you to the elevator. I’ve got a favor to ask.”

Owen cuts a skeptical glance my way. “What?”

“That computer you gave Zara…”

He laughs and shakes his head as he punches the down button for the elevator. “Such a sap. What about the computer I gave Zara?”

“What are the odds you can track it? She disabled the tracking apps I put on her phone.”

Owen’s mouth twists into a disapproving frown but he nods as he backs into the elevator. “After this meeting.”

I clasp my hands together and bow. “Thank you. Seriously.”

The elevator doors close before I hear his response, but I know Owen will have the computer’s location within the next couple of hours.

I say goodbye to Matteo, and head back out to my car in the parking garage and drive to the office where I have things to focus on to keep from obsessing about Zara.

But in my office, all I can think about is taking her on my desk. The only good thing about never having taken her to my house is that I don’t have memories of her there to distract me, so I’m at the office for less than half an hour before I slam the door and head home.

The feds seem to have lost interest in me, and I paid someone to clean up the mess they left. Even at my house she haunts me, and I can only pray that these feelings wane with time. Glancing down, I realize I’m wearing the red tie she bought me for our second trip to the club, and I feel like a sap.

I link up with Clara on a video call so we can go over my schedule for the rest of the week, and we’re halfway through when Owen calls.

“I need to take this. Let me call you back.”

“Owen, what’s going on?” My heart rate increases at the possibility that he might have news about Zara.

“I don’t know yet. Are you sure Zara took the computer with her?”
