Glancing either side of me to where the guys were kneeling stiffly, I saw the shock on their faces as they realised that this man knew what they were.

“You’re a witch,” I guessed, looking back up at him.

He beamed again. “Of course I am, and I’m most curious if you have any more of those portal tokens in your possession.”

I buried my surprise under a mask of indifference, having had many years of practice hiding my true emotions under my mother’s careful watch. “I’m afraid I only had enough to bring us back. We have no desire to return to that realm.”

His eyes narrowed as he assessed my words, but after a second he nodded curtly and gestured to one of his men.

“Fine, grab her.”

“No,” Spencer bit out, beginning to move towards me, but a click from the weapon held to his head made him flinch and freeze.

The man tutted down at him, shaking his head. “Not a good idea, we wouldn’t hesitate to shoot the vermin. The only thing keeping you alive is her compliance. So sit, doggy, and stay.”

Taking advantage of his distraction as he taunted the Alpha, I quickly shoved my bag towards Hawk. He frowned at me in confusion, but I gave him a meaningful look before raising a hand in the air.

“I’ll come with you,” I called, grabbing everyone’s attention again. “But I can’t exactly walk.”

A stocky, bald man stepped forwards, placing his weapon in a holder at his hip before reaching down to pull me into his arms. I gasped as the harsh movement jolted my injuries, hearing Linc’s muttered curse as I was carried quickly towards a waiting vehicle. I bit my lips hard to keep from making a sound as he dumped me carelessly onto the back seat, the man in charge slipping in on the other side just as a loud crack rang through the air. I leapt in shock, turning frantically back towards the portal, but the vehicle door was slammed in my face as it began to move.

“You said you wouldn’t hurt them!” I snapped, tears pricking my eyes as he just smirked unapologetically.

“I guess they couldn’t obey orders,” he said, waving a dismissive hand at me. “Wipe those tears away, Daughter, we have a long drive ahead of us, and much to discuss.”
