Fury rippled through me as I thought about the way she had been treated as a child. She tried to downplay it, but there was no denying the strength she showed as she pushed past her trauma for the sake of our pack.

“Come on,” she murmured. “Let’s get this over with.”

Zeke watched as she sent her light orb hovering above us again. “Is that a drain on your power?”

She shrugged as she took her bag back from him and shouldered it. “I’m inside the earth, I’ll naturally soak up the energy down here so it won’t make much of a dent in my reserves.”

“Lead the way, Alpha,” Noah grinned, his face falling as she scowled at him.

“I’m still mad at you,” she snapped, turning to march down the passageway.

He gave us an incredulous look before going after her with a sigh, leaving us chuckling as we followed.

“Her anxiety is feeding that anger,” Zeke said quietly. “He’s going to have to grovel.”

I nodded. “Shame.”

We shared a grin as he turned to gesture rudely back at us, his enhanced hearing picking up our conversation.

An easy silence fell as we followed Cordelia through the dark tunnel, the shadows thick beyond her light. A heaviness seemed to settle over us as we walked, our amusement soon forgotten as we fell into our own thoughts.

“I heard what Saffy said to you,” Zeke murmured a while later, the two of us still far enough behind the others that we wouldn’t be easily overheard.

I quirked a brow at him. “Yeh?”

He fell silent again for a long moment, weighing up his words. “Is your gut telling you that we aren’t coming back?”

“Is yours?” I asked, my surprise obvious.

He tipped his head, clearly unsure. “I don’t know. I’m not sure I trust my gut anymore.”

We walked for a few long minutes, watching Cordelia calmly leading us on before I spoke again.

“Does it matter?”

He breathed a flat laugh. “You’re right. It doesn’t make a difference, does it.”

I shrugged. “Where she goes, we follow. And ultimately, we have to try to win this.”

“Anything for her. Anything for the pack.”

I nodded at him. “Exactly that, brother. Anything.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Cordelia

Ourfootstepsechoedaroundus as the tunnel took us north, my light bouncing off the walls either side of us, showing only smooth, uninterrupted stone. I forced myself not to consider the weight of the earth above us or the fact that there was no way out behind us. I wasn’t trapped, we were here with a purpose, and every step forward took me towards the way out.

After sorting everything we needed with the pack yesterday, I had fallen asleep in Noah’s arms, determined to appreciate my soft bed before we went back to enjoying the ground every night. Liam had crawled in with us at some point, settling my lingering worries that there was any tension between them, and I’d woken that morning in the middle of a very satisfying sandwich. I couldn’t fault their ability to share, that was for sure.

A warm hand slid into mine and I looked over to find Zeke looking down at me, a twinkle of appreciation in his eye.

“I’m enjoying those pants,” he said, his lip twitching at the corner.

I looked down briefly at my leather leggings before shaking my head, giving him a knowing smile. “Don’t you have better things to think about then what I’m wearing?”

He looked at me in surprise. “Are you kidding me? The answer to that is a firm no.”
