“I love you, Mariam.”

My heart stutters.

He goes on. “If you don’t like this arrangement, fine. I’m putting your name on the deed.”

I smile and shake my head. I don’t know if I’m shaking my head over him being so damn extra or over me getting in my own way.

He keeps going, and it only gets better. “Consider it my wedding gift to you.”

My cheeks turn a deep shade of red; I can see it in the reflection in the glass.

I fight back a smile as I absorb what he just said.

“Ah, there’s my Dimples. What do you say? Will you marry me?”

The glass is cold, and a shiver runs over me.

I let go of the glass, walk to the door and unlock it. And then I step outside into the sunshine, where Jesse waits for me.

“Just so you know, I’m gonna kiss you whether you say yes or no.”

“Of course, the answer is yes,” I say as Chewbacca roars behind me.

I lean forward and close my eyes, expecting a simple press of lips.

Except there’s nothing simple about Jesse’s kiss. My feet leave the ground, and I’m being spun in a circle.

Jesse kisses with everything he has. He slides his tongue into my mouth in a kiss so fierce his hat falls off.

I hold on tight, wrapping my legs around his middle, anchoring me against him with his hands under my thighs.

“I’ve always wanted to try that,” I say, smiling down at him.

His breath catches, and he presses his forehead against mine. “I love you so damn much.”

“And I love you, Jesse.”

“Good, because if you said no, I’d be waiting outside the bakery all day, every day, until you loved me back.”

“And I would let you suffer.”

“I love a woman who doesn’t try to talk me out of what I want.”

I laugh. “You can put me down now.”

Instead, we’re walking away from the shop, down the alleyway toward my door.

He hauls it open. “Wife, you are going to start locking your door.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Ooh, I like that,” he says, taking the stairs up.

“Don’t get your hopes up; I’m not calling you that in bed. And you can put me down now.”

He laughs, hauling me up the stairs like I weigh nothing. “I don’t think so. I’d like us both to make it upstairs uninjured.”

This gets him a playful bite to his stubbly chin.
