Fuck! Where was she? What was she supposed to do? She tried the door, but it refused to open. She tried each of the windows facing the back of the estate, but they were bolted down, and the glass was too thick to break with her hands.

She knew Henry would move heaven and earth to find her, but how long could she wait? What did Sher plan to do with her? Kirsten would rather pass if it was anything as nasty as what she did to the guards back at Henry’s house. Give her a quick death if that was the end goal. Let her go without regrets.

She looked around the room, which had a bed, a table, a chair, and no bathroom. Instead, there was a giant box in the corner, filled with two pounds of fresh litter. She rolled her eyes. Sher was the weirdest shifter she had ever met ... even if she had actually only met a few.

She sighed. The day had been long and tiring, and she slumped in the only chair in the room in a fit of exhaustion. It was absolutely hopeless. She was finally, well and truly alone.

THIRTY-SEVEN

HENRY

He didn’t have many options as he went over everything that happened. Zara and Kirsten were taken against their will, and he had no idea where. He knew it was early in the morning, so they could have reached Sher’s destination.

Sher. She had been the one that did this. She was the one that came in and took the girls. He could understand why she would take Zara, but he didn’t understand why she took Kirsten.

She doesn’t like Kirsten but to take her? What was the point? Just to piss me off? She has to know that isn’t a smart idea.

She doesn’t plan on you finding them. That was the point. She doesn’t want to be found.

He ran farther into the woods, knowing he was leaving his land and going into another’s territory. He knew it wasn’t the safest plan, and it would likely anger them, but he didn’t know what else to do. He needed help, and he would take it from anyone at this point.

He ran fast and quick until he found himself at a large cabin. It was a two-story house that he knew had bear shifters. He had entered their land a few times for various things. He hadn’t ever talked much because there was never any need.

He shifted and walked up to the front door, and knocked. He swallowed, hoping he could get the help that he was looking for. He needed it.

The door swung open, and a big burly man stood on the other end. He narrowed his eyes as he scowled at him. “Interesting to find a tiger shifter on my land. That doesn’t happen often.”

Was he to beg? Or would he just splurge everything in the hope the man would have compassion?

“Who’s at the door?” A woman poked her head around, looking at him. He swallowed again, still having said nothing.

“Tiger,” the man grumbled, still waiting.

“I need help. I’ll pay you as much as you require if you can help,” he finally managed, looking up at the man. “I’ve had some people stolen from me, and I need a hand.”

The woman walked to the door and tilted her head. “You’re Henry, aren’t you? You sell the woodwork downtown, don’t you?” She gently tapped the man’s arm. “He made our table.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly. His eyes looked back at the man, and he looked at the woman.

“Darling, can you go grab my jacket for me?”

She smiled and turned, leaving them alone. The man frowned. “I’ll need more than that.”

So, he told him. He told him everything that happened and that he wouldn’t be there if he didn’t need help.

He didn’t expect anything the longer he spoke. He sounded crazy. He wouldn’t be surprised if the guy refused.

But the man shook his head and frowned at the end. “Alright. I might know a few others that are willing. But I want something in the end.”

“Anything. However much money you want.” He was willing to give up a kidney if it made sure that Zara and Kirsten were back in his arms again.

“My wife has eyed up a piece of work you’ve had for years. You’ve always said it’s not for sale. We’re in if you give us that, plus a pretty penny.”

The man, who he found out was named Rob, called a few of his friends, and they were over within half an hour. Henry met Rob’s wife, Rosy, who was the sweetest woman he’d met.

Once his friends arrived, they headed out to scope the area where Zara and Kirsten could be. Sher’s estate. He still feared they wouldn’t be there as it was too obvious, but he wanted backup just in case. He had to start somewhere, but the whole time his gut twisted, wondering what he would do if he couldn’t find them.

Her estate was farther east, and it was a drive away. He was anxious during the entire ride. Everyone was quiet, and it gave him time to think.
