It’s nice.

Normal even.

Reminds me of the summer before coming to Eyam; before being reunited with the dickhead that is Theodore Thomas. The only thing that would make it any better is if Noah was here too.

“That guy over there keeps looking at you,” Betty says under her breath, gesturing awkwardly with her head to a table tucked away in the corner. A couple of guys sit there, and I recognise them from the academy, but it’s the one eyeing me directly that has me groaning. “What?”

“That’s Adam,” I tell her, though, she still looks confused. “He’s in business law with us?”

She shakes her head, pursing her lips. “The guy who asked me on a date, which I stupidly said yes to and then spent the last week ghosting like a little bitch?”

“Ohh, why did you say yes to him again? I feel like you never told me?”

Biting my lip, I tell her about the text and the no-dating rule Theodore sent me that day when he asked. I’m sure most people would be shocked and a little annoyed on my behalf, but not Betty. She laughs uncontrollably, letting out a snort for good measure.

“You do know how to keep things interesting, huh?”

“Yeah, or how to make my life harder,” I mumble, taking a sip of my lemonade. For once, I’m driving. The last thing I need right now is to get drunk and make more bad decisions with an alcohol-impaired brain.

“He’s coming over here, so I hope you know what the fuck you’re going to say to him.”

My eyes widen, and I quickly glance around the room. Before I can map out an escape route, a hand drops down onto the oak table, demanding my attention.

“Hey, ladies,” Adam says, keeping his voice low. I think he’s going for sexy, with a deep drawl, but he fails—miserably. “Fallon.”

Closing my eyes for a beat, I pull in a slow breath before plastering a smile on my face and looking up at him. “Hello.”

“I’ve texted you a few times, about that date?”

“Have you?” I ask, playing clueless. Maybe if I pretend my phone isn’t working, I’ll be able to avoid any awkwardness. Though, in that exact moment, it vibrates on the table, and I know that’s out. “Sorry, I’ve been super busy.”

“Well now I’ve got you here, let’s get it set up.”

A sharp pain in my leg has me snapping my face to Betty’s. She shakes her head, not even remotely trying to be inconspicuous despite the fact he’s right next to us. I raise my hands slightly, trying to ask her what the fuck I’m meant to do. The guy is right here, I can’t just tell him no.

Can I?

No.

That would make me a terrible person.

I shrug at her in defeat before turning back to him. “Yep, sounds good.”

Another kick to my leg, harder this time, but I ignore her.

“Friday? Eight o’clock?”

That’s two days from now. I don’t even want to go on this date, let alone go out with him so soon. But I don’t say any of that, instead, I agree with a fake smile.

Friday at eight.

If I even make it that far.

I’ve no doubts that Theodore is serious with his rules, but I can’t find it in me to care, even if he’s planning to dole out punishment. I’m thinking that might not necessarily be a bad thing.

Though I can’t help but wonder what that says about me.
