“Do you need to get that?” he asks when my phone vibrates again, this time longer, signalling a call as opposed to a text.

“I probably should,” I tell him, stepping away from the table with my bag in my hand. “Just give me a minute.”

“Sure, I’ll order our food while you’re gone.” Another wink is sent my way. I like all Italian food and have no allergies so there’s really no harm in letting him order for me . . . even if it is weird as fuck.

I escape to the bathroom, pulling my phone out the moment I lock the door behind me. The incessant vibrating hasn’t stopped, so I swipe the call, not bothering to look at the name flashing on my screen.

“Betty, I’m fine,” I tell her with a laugh. “We’ve not long sat down, I’ll let you know if I need you to ring with an emergency, I promise.”

“Hello, Casper.” Pulling my phone away from my ear, I glance at the screen, groaning when I realise I have answered Theodore’s call. Well, fuck. “I hear you’re on a date.”

“How do you even know?” I huff. He’s not here, so there’s no reason he should know my whereabouts or plans.

“You underestimate me.”

“Clearly.”

“Go home,” he demands in a cold tone. “I thought I told you no dating.”

“Please, as if I care what you tell me,” I scoff dryly. His answering chuckle down the line goes straight to my centre, and I want to punch myself in the face for my body’s instant reaction.

After I punch him, of course.

“Ready for another rule, baby?”

“Fuck your rules, Teddy.”

“I’d rather fuck you instead.” The deep drawl has me leaning against the sink, clenching my thighs together to stop the flow of juices dampening my underwear. “But since I’m not there right now, rule number four.”

“Can we not?” I ask, my voice flat, though, it’s as if he doesn’t hear me when he continues speaking.

“No fucking touching,” he warns, the chill in his voice sending a violent shiver down my spine. “Allow him to touch you, Casper, and I will kill him. You are mine to touch, and I do not share.”

“You can’t be serious?” I laugh, though, there’s no amusement in the sound. There’s no way he just threatened deadly fucking harm to a guy if he touches me. That’s so not normal.

“Oh, I’m serious,” he retorts with a soft laugh when I gasp. “See you soon.”

The line goes dead before I can say anything more. Though, really, what more could I say? There’s something so very wrong with what he threatened. And there’s also something so very wrong with the way my body responds to his words.

Taking a deep breath, I let it out slowly before straightening up.

Adam smiles widely when I rejoin him, standing to slide my chair out for me, but I grab it quickly, not giving him a chance. I’m not a hundred per cent convinced Theodore was telling the truth, but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk if he was.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah, just my friend,” I tell him, plastering a smile on my face. The least I can do now is try and be good company. “Anyway, tell me a bit about yourself?”

Betty throws herself face down on my bed, curls into the pillows and stares at me. She waits, impatiently, for me to talk, but I don’t just yet. I know what she’s after, and while I want to spill all the details and debrief with her—it’s way more fun to torture her in silence.

“Come on,” she whines, staring at me with puppy-dog eyes. “How was it?”

“Awful,” I groan, shutting my Kindle and sliding down to lie next to her.

“Why?”

Where to even start on explaining why my date with Adam last night was so bloody terrible. It’s not just one defining moment that made the evening bad. Every single thing he did was grating and uncomfortable. If he wasn’t asking about the other three heirs, he was staring down my top, or trying to touch me whenever he could get his hands on me.

When I tell her this, she grimaces appropriately, her blue eyes softening with sympathy. We lie beside each other, both silent when I finish telling her the details of the night. I’m annoyed at myself for even going. I had bad feelings about it all day, but the stubborn part of me—the part that is determined to get underneath Theodore’s skin—wouldn’t let me find an excuse to bail.
