I rush through the halls, avoiding the eyes of people as I pass. Noah catches up to me when I find my way outside. Rain is falling in light drops, and I let my head fall back. The water splashes my face, chilling me instantly.

“Hey, baby girl,” he says when he reaches me. “Where have you been?”

“With my adviser. Dad insisted I go this week.”

Nodding, he drops his arm over my shoulder and walks us towards the dorms. I’ve avoided both my friends since lunch time, hiding out in the library instead of going to any of my classes or meeting up with them during break.

I know they will ask questions, and I just don’t have the answers.

“I’m not going to ask,” he says, staring down at me with a small smile on his face. I look at him confused, my brow furrowing. Can this boy read my mind? “I can see it written all over your face, Fal. You’re worried I’m going to ask you about what happened in the dining hall. And while I’m absolutely dying to, because holy hot.” He fans a hand over his face, his eyes rolling to the back of his head dramatically.

Swatting him away, I can’t help but laugh.

“But it’s obvious you aren’t ready to talk about any of it yet.”

“Yeah. I sigh, linking my arm through his with a smile. “It was kind of hot, huh?”

“Seriously, if you don’t let that man rail you, please send him my way.”

“Eww, stop that,” I demand. We walk through the lobby of the dorm, heading straight for the lift. Hushed whispers sound around us from the few students heading to their rooms now the university day is over. I don’t bother dropping my head this time.

I have nothing to be ashamed of.

A woman enjoying sex should be normal.

“You wanna go out for dinner with me tonight?” I ask Noah, calling the lift. “I feel like we haven’t spent nearly enough time together lately. I miss my best friend.”

He spins to face me, a wide smile on his face. “You asking me on a date, baby girl?”

“Fuck yes, wanna date me?”

“What’s going on with you and Fallon?” Gage asks, passing me the joint from his hand. Once again, my dorm has become the go-to hang out for the night, with Kyle passed out on the armchair, a bottle of beer hanging from his hand.

“Nothing,” I tell him, taking a hit and letting the taste sit on my tongue for a moment before swallowing it down.

“Fuck off.” He laughs, leaning forward on the couch and twisting his head to stare at me with eager eyes. “You can’t tell me that what happened in the dining hall was nothing. Mate, you claimed her in front of the whole student body.”

Too fucking right I did.

And I’d do it again if necessary.

I will not watch the likes of Adam Nielson putting his paws on her. Or anyone else for that matter. I might not have her the way I want, but that means no other fucker gets to have her either.

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you, it was nothing. A bit of fun.”

“Hmm, if you say so,” he murmurs, moving from the couch and towards the door. “Then you won’t mind if someone else has some fun with her. She’s not really my type, but after seeing her almost fall apart like that, I could be tempted.”

Before I have a moment to realise what I’m doing, I’m across the room and socking him in the nose. “Don’t you fucking dare.”

“I fucking knew it.”

His mouth lifts into a wide grin, and he pats me on the shoulder like I’m a fucking child. He looks too satisfied, and I want to punch myself in the face for taking the bait.

After I punch him again.

“So, what are you going to do?” he asks, folding his arms over his chest and leaning back against the wall. “You know she’s not going to wait around for you forever, right? A girl like Fallon, she deserves better than that.”

“I fucking know that.” I groan, running my hands through my hair. She’s always deserved better than what I can give her, that’s for sure. It’s not even about that. I’m a selfish prick, and if it was just that, I wouldn’t hesitate to have her—no matter what I think she deserves. “But it’s not that simple.”
