Page 61 of Play By The Rules

“I think I’ve already done that.” I laugh, thinking about those stupid rules of his.

“Fine.” She huffs, continuing her pacing for a long moment before spinning to face me again with a wide smile. “Then break them again, starting with the no-dating rule.”

I shake my head, looking to Noah for help but he just laughs beside me, before muttering, “You, my friend, are going on a date.”

THIRTY-ONE

“Whatabouthim?”Bettywhispers, pointing towards a guy sitting at the front of our business law class. Shaking my head, I don’t bother answering her. Since she got the idea into her head about me going on a date, neither she nor Noah have stopped picking out guys in the academy they think are up for the task. “He’s got that Clark Kent vibe, don’t you think? Super cute.”

I raise a brow at her, staring pointedly. While the guy is cute, with his glasses and curly brown hair, Clark Kent has never been my go-to type and she knows that. At this point, I think they’re just wanting to set me up with anyone—anyone at all—that isn’t Theodore.

“You realise I haven’t actually agreed to any of this, right?”

She shrugs, a small smile on her face. “You will. It’s only a matter of time.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really. I know you, Fallon. Eventually you’re going to cave because you want to know the truth as much as we do.”

“What truth is that?”

“Whether Theo is serious,” she tells me before turning back to the work in front of her. I try to focus on my own, considering this is one of the many classes I’m failing, though, it’s a struggle. Not only because I can’t make any sense of the words written out on the paper—it’s all a load of nonsense—but also because she’s right.

It’s been over a week since the academy started back after the half term, and other than the one English lesson Theodore and I share, I haven’t seen him. If he was serious about his “counteroffer,” then I assume he’d be making more of an effort, but he is currently sitting on zero when it comes to the effort scale.

I’m beyond confused.

The bell rings, signalling the end of class, so I quickly shove my laptop and textbook into my bag before following Betty out of the room and to the dining hall. Noah joins us outside the hall, wrapping an arm around my waist and tugging me towards a table in the corner.

“How are we on finding Fallon a date?” he asks Betty.

Rolling my eyes, I pull my phone out and let them talk about me as if I’m not sitting right here. Scrolling through social media, I ignore them as they discuss options of who would be a good choice.

I’m about to put my phone away when an unknown number flashes on my screen. Opening the message, my stomach churns at the image before me. It’s a photo of Anna and Theodore, dated this morning. They’re in his dorm, and she’s sitting on his lap grinning at the camera, while he whispers something into her ear with his hand resting high on her thigh.

I haven’t given the girl a second thought in weeks, not since that day in Bennett’s office. She’s insignificant in the grand scheme of things—or so I thought.

Apparently fucking not.

I turn my phone facedown, lifting my head so I can look around the dining hall. My eyes zero in on his table, and my blood chills at the sight of her sitting beside him. They aren’t touching, but the fact that she’s just there is enough to have me clenching my jaw in anger.

Anna spots me first, her lips curling into a satisfied smile when she notices me staring. She sends a finger wave before turning and running a hand down Theodore’s arm. He doesn’t turn to her, but he also doesn’t push her away.

So much for wanting me, huh?

“Just pick anyone,” I tell my friends who are arguing the merits over whether a football player that Noah knows would be a good fit for me. They stop talking instantly, both turning their heads in surprise.

“Wait,” Betty starts, eyeing me in confusion. “You’re seriously going to let us set you up on a date? You’re not punking us, right?”

“Nope. Set me up.”

“What changed your mind?” Noah asks warily, searching my face.

“Nothing,” I tell them truthfully. Nothing has changed. It’s amusing that for even one second I had thought Theodore was being truthful in wanting something with me.

Something real at least.

I’m under no illusions that if I offered him my body, he’d take me in a heartbeat with no regrets.
