The very moment I met Luke, I could tell he was a man of secrets. His mystery intrigued me. It was the reason I found myself talking to him, trying to reach for those thick layers of his obscurity, tearing them down one after the other.

But Luke is an unending maze of secrets. I don't know who he really is and it scares me that the revelation I just got from his neighbor would change my perspective of him. Or not.

Should I really care about Luke's secrets? Every other thing about him is a breath of wonder. From his mesmerizing looks to his heated touch, Luke makes my desires flutter on clouds of unfiltered delight, capturing me in the warmth of what he possesses. He matches my definition of peace. Bliss. Everything that speaks of tranquility in the midst of a roaring storm.

His secrets don’t matter. Not when the feelings are this strong.

I reach for my phone in my bag and call Luke. It goes to voicemail immediately.Hello, I'm not available right now. Leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I get it.

His deep voice whispers over my skin, as if he can touch me without even being close, sizzling the pit of my belly and reminding me exactly why I’m here. I miss him. How he makes me feel. How I love making him feel.

Disappointed, I slip my phone into my jacket pocket and leave Luke's empty apartment.

The next stop I make is to the bar. Several of my kind are inside, gathering at their usual tables and drinking like they can see extra lives at the bottom of their glasses. The usual noise. The loud jabs. I hate to be here right now but I trudge ahead, toward the counter, head bowed and my heart coated with loneliness.

I ignore two werewolves who shout lewd comments at me, too bothered by Luke's absence to care about them. I'm only here for a drink. Maybe I'll find comfort at the pit of my tumbler, too.

"They’re new in town," my favorite cousin, Carl, says when I get to the counter. He’s cleaning beer mugs and staring at the catcalling wolves in disgust.

"Ah, that’s why they don't know Lawrence will claw their faces if they make a move on me."

"I don't like them," my cousin admits. His eyes return to his mugs but I can still sense his swirling desperation to kick these mannerless wolves out of his bar. "They’re loud and don't know when to shut up. I can't wait for your brothers to come in and make them shit their pants."

His joke gets a shrug from me. I clasp my hands, place them on the counter and release a deep sigh. I’d imagined the visit to Luke’s apartment would go a little differently. Having a talk while I got lost in his eyes, his delicious lips moving without me catching any single word. Then I would’ve taken a bold step of kissing him as I found that strong Adeline he brings out in me. He would’ve led me to the bed and we’d tangle in the sheets, my lips burning with every call of his name.

"Are you alright?" Carl's voice interrupts my thoughts of Luke fucking me in his apartment.

"I'm good," I quickly answer.

I'm not. I want Luke more than the oxygen I breathe. He's the one who leads me to unexplored realms. He's heaven on…

Stop it, Addy! Or you're going to lose yourself.

"The Addy I know never says I'm good," Carl says, arching an eyebrow. "She just folds her arms, raises an eyebrow and asks you why you think she isn't alright. Always a question to answer a question."

A scoff escapes my lips as I cross my arms. "Why do you think I'm not alright?"

Carl picks up another mug and begins to clean it. "Don't bullshit me. You're too late with the usual question. Are you alright?"

I drop my arms and know that it’s time to tell my cousin the truth. When I let out another sigh, my bottom lip pushes out, diverting the airflow to my bangs. "I miss someone."

"Aha." Carl grins, his eyes narrowing as a gleam of curiosity settles in them. "You have a boy on your mind. Who is he?"

"He's a new guy in town. You met him a few days ago."

"I meet a lot of new guys and wolves." Carl eyes the loud wolves again. "Some of them I don't want to meet again."

I laugh, sensing my loaded heart take a dive to 'relief street’. Don't think about Luke's empty apartment for now. Think about why you like him.

"He's nothing like them."

"Interesting. What does he look like?"

"A work of fascinating art. I could spend hours just describing his eyes and what they do to me," I answer, elbow on the counter and hand resting on my cheek.

Carl’s eyes widen. "Oh, that smile! You like this wolf. Why do I not remember him?"

I roll my eyes and take my hand from my cheek, poking the counter's hard surface with my index finger. "Anniversary? You thought he was married but it was the anniversary of his father's death? Ring a bell?"
