"Let me guess, Arthur asked you to follow me?"

Fena shrugs and folds her arms. "Kinda. We don't want wolves leaving the camp without telling someone."

I scoff and get to my feet. "I'm not going to tell anyone about the camp. The High Ridge Pack took my family too."

Fena shakes her head. "It's not that. You don't understand how dangerous these people are. They search the woods every night for wolves. They just haven't found out where we are."

"That's... Wolves have a way of discovering packs. It's strange, or damn fucking lucky, that the camp hasn't been discovered."

Fena's half smile returns. "No, we’re under ancient protection. Arthur isn't the only pack leader. A more powerful wolf is protecting us."

I raise an eyebrow at her. "What wolf?"

Fena's answer is interrupted by a barrage of howls. The wailing wolves sound very close and the fear that creeps into Fena's eyes tells me they’re not from her pack.

"Quick! Let's get back!"

We race to the camp together, Fena glancing over her shoulder the whole way as if she’s expecting to be attacked. There, Fena tells Arthur the High Ridge wolves are in the woods again.

"No one leaves the camp until morning," Arthur announces to everyone.

His hazel eyes settle on me. Arthur possesses such an authoritative aura around him that it’s hard to picture a more powerful wolf ordering him around. Who is the actual leader of the Blood Born Pack?

"Your best shot at staying alive is here. If you go out to the woods alone, you'll find nothing but a bunch of mindless wolves who will end your life," the pack leader states flatly.

Staying alive is my priority. Ending up dead means my pack's death will go in vain.Yeah, Arthur, I understand.

I go to sit with some wolves around a campfire and one of them offers me a beer. I thank him after taking the drink. The men talk about the wolves from the High Ridge Pack and how they’ll enjoy ripping their bodies apart when they win the pack wars.

My mind immediately goes to Adeline. She’s from the same pack everyone is out to get. I can’t bear the thought of someone tearing her into pieces, her perfect wolf form becoming nothing but a litter of bones, flesh and blood.

I have to take her away from her people. Sounds ridiculous but it's the only way. Adeline doesn't deserve to die for the sins of her pack.

I pull out my phone from my pocket to text Adeline.Wanna see a movie with me? Is tomorrow night okay?

Her response is immediate, as if she’s been waiting to get a text from me.Sure! Tomorrow night is okay.

"Your girl?" The wolf who had handed me the beer asks, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.

"Uh?" I say, slipping my phone back into my pocket.

"You're smiling."

He’s right. It’s already stretching to the ends of my mouth, the thought of seeing Adeline tomorrow night bursting in my heart.

"Yeah," I say, bringing the bottle to my lips. "She's my girl.”

Chapter10

Adeline

Luke is standing outside my house. A gun is in his face.

"Move the fuck back," Damian's tone is as harsh as the biting look in his eyes, like staring into the depth of a freezing whirlpool.

I’ve never seen him this angry. Damian isn't…totally sane. He does very irrational things that makes me scared of him all the more.

My family knows he’s unstable but we pretend and overlook his batty acts. Even when we try to help him, Damian reminds us that he doesn’t have a screw loose. Then he goes out to do something totally out of this world.
