Fena pauses as she works around the room, closing the blinds. The woman looks at me for a long time. Then she sits on the only sofa in the room and motions to me to sit down too.

"Like what?"

"That's the problem." I use the edge of the blanket to swat at an insect. "I don't know where she is. Adeline was supposed to be at my apartment hours ago but she didn't show up. I went to the bar where I first met her and she wasn't there. Then I met her brother."

"Which of her brothers?" Fena asks.

"Lawrence."

"That maniac," Fena hisses. "He's the most dangerous of them all, always out for blood. Did he say anything about Adeline?"

"Yes."

I tell her all that Lawrence told me and how I strongly believe Adeline would never call me a fling. Fena agrees with me. The High Ridge brothers are liars and they wield deception to their gain.

"Maybe Adeline is at home because she doesn't want to lead her brothers to you. I'm sure she's fine."

"No. I've got this feeling inside my bones that Adeline is in trouble."

"Okay." Fena tucks a strand of her hair behind her ear. "What do you want me to do?"

"I need your help finding Adeline. I don't know if I should involve the Blood Born pack."

"Wait, wait, hold up." Fena chuckles in derision, rising to her feet. "The Blood Born pack? That's impossible! You're not even a member yet and you want the pack to help you save a woman who is from the enemy pack?"

She's right but right now, my head is empty of better ideas. I desperately want to save Adeline. The thought of losing her buries me in anguish and my lungs close in as the pain envelopes me. I’ve never felt this way, never felt this fear and it makes me realize how much I love her.

"Then tell me what to do!" I get on my feet, too. "I can't just sit back and let Adeline's brothers hurt her. Lawrence knows where she is, but he's never going to tell me."

"But you can't ask the Blood Born Pack to help you!" Fena snaps. She brushes her hair backward with her hands, breathing deeply. "Do you know what's going to happen if you tell them? They’re going to kill Adeline. They’re not going to care that she's the love of your life."

"Will you help me, then?" I search her face for an answer. "Will you help me save Adeline?"

Fena's expression is one that I can't read, but her answer is simple. Maybe she knows I have no one else to turn to.

"Fine, I'll help you, Luke. But we have to be careful. The Blood Born pack can’t find out about this. Because if they do, the High Wolf is really going to be angry."

"The High Wolf?"

"Yes, the more powerful wolf who protects us. According to Arthur, I heard he's going to be coming to the woods one of these days to check on the Blood Borns. We really don't want him coming here and learning we saved a High Ridge wolf."

The idea of meeting this powerful wolf is intriguing. He appears to be a good man, a wolf who has given every lost and lonely soul somewhere to belong. And he’s building an army, waiting to descend on the High Ridge Pack.

But saving Adeline is more important to me and I don't care whether the High Wolf likes it or not.

"Have you ever met this High Wolf?"

Fena shakes her head. "No one has. I don't know about Arthur though. But I've heard tales of the High Wolf that when he looks at you, you have no choice but to bow. He commands respect and most of the wolves fear him. His only worthy rival is the Alpha of High Ridge pack, Adeline's father. When he started this pack, he recruited wolves by hiring spies to watch them before deeming them fit to be a member of Blood Born."

"And has the High Wolf ever fallen in love?"

Fena is taken aback by my question. "What? How am I supposed to know that?"

I let the blanket fall and fix Fena with a determined look. "I’m a wolf who’s tasted what true love is and I'm not going to back down because the High Wolf doesn't want it. I love Adeline and I'll do whatever it takes to save her."
