"And you don't think they'll ever find us?"

"Adeline." I breathe deeply. "Stop thinking about them."

"It's just that I know my family. They'll search the ends of the world just to find me. I want to be with you, Luke, but we need to be smart about this. How do we cover our scents?"

"The perfume," I tell her. "We'll have to look for a seller, someone who is going to be selling it to us on a regular basis."

"Oh, that's a smart idea," Adeline comments.

I give her one last kiss and smile to myself again. I've got this worked out—I think.

"Luke?" Adeline speaks again. "Thanks for saving me."

I pull her in tighter. "No, you saved me."

Chapter20

Adeline

Fena pounds on our door the next morning.

I stir in my sleep, awake enough to hear Luke leave the bed and open the door. The chirping of birds tells me it's already day.

"Fena, what's wrong?" Luke asks. His voice is faint, as though I'm still in a dream.

I'm too tired to even open my eyes. The warm bed under me is what I want to lay on forever—and Luke's chest. But he's no longer beside me. He's talking to Fena and her response forces my eyes open.

"They’re still in the woods! You need to get out of here now!"

I sit up in bed, blinking rapidly to banish the sleep from my eyes. Fena looks alarmed, as though she saw something horrific outside. Luke looks back at me, his face squeezing into a worried expression.

"What are you talking about?"

Fena enters the room. She doesn't mind that I'm naked under the sheets and Luke is in his boxers. "Just get dressed!"

Luke grabs her arm before she can hurry out of the room and spins her around to look at him. "What's wrong?"

Fena glances in my direction before wriggling her arm from Luke's grip. "Her family. They’re getting closer."

“Shit!" I cry, jumping out of bed. I grab Fena's sweatshirt and put it on. "They’re following my scent, I'm sure of it."

"I don't think so. I masked your scent with the badger I killed last night. I think they know there's a pack in these woods. I'm not sure but I guess that's why they haven't gone back to their base."

I clutch Luke's hand. "We need to go."

Fena runs out of the room. I wait for Luke to get dressed and then we leave, just as Fena appears with a pair of trousers. She tosses it at me.

"Here. They should be your size. The badger's smell won't last long so you have to leave now."

"What about you?" I ask Fena. "What's going to happen to you?"

"You don't have to worry about me. Your scents will overpower mine. I'll fake a letter that says you should put the key under the mat when you leave and put it on my table. When they stumble on this cabin, they'll think I'm a kind human who took you in."

"Okay, we'll go now. Thanks, Fena." I hug the female wolf tightly. "You've been so kind to us."

I try to pull Luke out of the cabin but to my surprise, Luke doesn't move. I look at him and see he has his gaze on Fena. He's reluctant to leave.

"Fena, what's going to happen to the pack?"
