It's exhilarating watching his focused protection, more exciting that his hand never leaves mine as we travel through the woods. He’ll keep me safe. Just like I will for him.

"So?" I break the silence.

"What?"

"The Fena and my brother thing."

"Oh, that." Luke doesn't look at me. "Do you want to hear that now?"

"Yes. It's rather strange that she thinks Jake’s a good person. He is, but he's still my brother and he listens to Lawrence."

"She loved your brother," Luke confesses.

"Really? When did this happen?"

We continue walking while Luke tells me about Fena and Jake. I don't find it surprising that Jake was nice to a captive, or that Fena fell in love with him because of his kindness. Jake has always been a nicer brother. Back at the cellar, he was the one who stopped Lawrence and Damian.

"That's who he always talked about," I tell Luke, realization hitting me. "Jake talked about some girl the pack held captive and he never stopped. If you ask me, I'd guess Jake loved Fena."

Luke squeezes my hand but doesn't look back. "Maybe your brother has a heart after all."

A tent soon comes into view and in front of it is a buff wolf who has his claws stretched and milky eyes glaring our way.

"Hey, Jack,” Luke calls out to the wolf before we get to him. “It's just me."

Jack's claws remain out and the scowl on his face fails to vanish at Luke's voice. "Who’s with you?"

"She's a friend," Luke answers, carefully approaching Jack.

I follow him closely, clasping him hard. All my bravery is suddenly feeling naive and stupid. I’m the daughter of the High Ridge Alpha. They could try to kill me before we get a chance to explain why I’m here.

"She doesn't smell like us," Jack insists.

"Her name is Adeline and she isn't a threat. Please, Jack. I just want to talk to Arthur. I've got something very important he needs to know."

Jack regards us for a few seconds before withdrawing his claws and tilting his head in the direction of the tent. "You know how to get there, don't you?"

Luke nods. "Yes." He leads me towards the tent and turns to tell Jack something. "Be careful out here, Jack. The enemy wolves are closing in."

The milky-eyed wolf just grunts and says nothing. He doesn't seem to believe Luke —anyone should be scared at such news. Luke pulls me away. We find a narrow path behind the tent and follow it until Jack and the tent are out of sight.

"What's up with him? Those eyes?"

"He's blind, Addy, but he's the smartest wolf I've ever met. I just don't think he believes the High Ridge wolves will ever find the Blood Borns."

"And why is that?"

"They are under the protection of a High Wolf. I've never met him but the pack talks about how powerful he is."

I freeze in my tracks. "The High Wolf?"

Luke is astonished by my reaction. "Yes. Why? You know him?"

The memory of the night I overheard Lawrence telling his friend, Kevin, about a High Wolf and how he attacked my father slips through my mind. My brother never answered me when I asked who he was talking about, but hearing the name again has triggered my curiosity.

"My brother, Lawrence, talked about him some days after my mother's death. He said the High Wolf attacked my father and maybe my mother too."

Luke frowns. "What? That's impossible. Are you saying the High Wolf killed your mother?"
