Arthur throws his head back to laugh. "So, you think you can talk to the High Wolf? Luke, that wolf is the most powerful one I've ever met. You can't just walk up to him and ask him to accept the enemy into our pack."

But I'm more determined than ever to prove to them that Adeline isn't like her family. "I don't care. Whatever it takes."

Just then, Jack runs into the tent, panting heavily like he just ran a million miles to get here. For a blind wolf, he does know how to barge into a room without ramming into something or someone.

"Arthur!" He says, almost breathless. "The High Wolf is here!"

Arthur springs to his feet. "Like right now?"

"Yes, but he's not yet in the camp. His first in command is here with the good news."

Arthur grabs Jack by the shoulders. "Did you see him? Do you know what he looks like?"

Jack looks confused. "No, I didn't."

It takes him a few seconds to realize he shouldn't have said that. The leader is so pumped with excitement that he isn't thinking straight.

"I have to go meet with him," Arthur says but before he can leave the tent, someone else enters.

It's the last person I'm expecting to see in a place like this. I shoot to my feet and from the corner of my eye, I see Adeline doing the same.

"Ryan?"

My next-door neighbor beams at me. His eyes are no longer creepy and there’s an aura of confidence surrounding him.

"You're the High Wolf?" I blurt out.

"Oh, I wish. I'm just his right-hand man," Ryan answers. Then he sees Adeline. Mischief sparks in his eyes for a second before it vanishes. "She's here, I see."

A growl tangles in my throat. The realization of what Ryan is doesn't sit well with me. All this time, he’d been...

"You've been spying on me?" I ask, clenching my fist.

Ryan notes the action but it only brings an amused smile to his face. "Yes, I have. I was only doing the High Wolf's command."

"So, you two have met?" Arthur states the obvious. "Great! But Ryan, if I may ask, where is the High Wolf?"

"He’s on his way but I came here to clear some things." Ryan's gaze settles on Adeline. "She can't be here when he arrives."

I scoff, holding Adeline by the hand. "Well, let's see you try to kick her out."

"Luke," Adeline murmurs to me. "I think I should go."

"No!" My tone is harsh and I really don't mean it but rage is surging through my body. "You're staying here and if anyone has a problem with it, they are the ones who should leave."

"You've always been stubborn!" Ryan grunts. "That's why the High Wolf asked me to watch you. You think before following orders and it’s always been your downfall."

"The High Wolf asked you to watch me?" I laugh in mockery. "Now that's ridiculous! I don't even know who he is!"

"Oh, you know him alright!" Ryan slips his hands in his pockets. "He’s always been there but your love for this woman has blinded you from seeing the truth."

"Watch your tone, Ryan," I growl. "The woman you're talking about is the person I want to spend the rest of my life with."

Ryan scoots closer to me and for a brief moment, I think he'll attack me. But his hands remain in his pockets. He stands in front of me, towering over me with his six-foot frame.

"She needs to leave," Ryan says firmly. "Her presence here is only going to make the High Wolf angry.”

“She’s staying.”
