“Sounds dangerously like settling down,” said Boone. “And that is also not in the cards for me.”

“So you just going to... What? And I’m serious, because I’m trying to figure this out too. You just going to have all this money, and nothing to invest it in. Nothing to make your own.”

Boone shrugged. “I have to find something that was worth making my own. Something that didn’t belong to someone else, that is.”

“Do you want something that does belong to someone else?”

“Story time’s over,” said Boone. And he knew that he’d hit a nerve.

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing. And anyway, none of your business. But there’s nothing wrong with just living life. Nothing wrong with... Hell, I mean, we’ve all accomplished things in the rodeo.”

“Yeah. We got a bunch of belt buckles. And a bunch of money. It’s just... Sometimes I ask what it’s all for.”

“What do you mean? It’s our family legacy?”

“It’s Dad’s legacy,” Jace said. “It’s not mine. I never sat down and decided that it was something I wanted to do. I just did it. And now I guess sometimes I want something that’s a little bit more... Mine.”

“So that’s where this hotel thing comes in?”

“I guess so.”

“Well good luck to you. It still sounds an awful lot like an entanglement to me. And honestly, another thing that makes you and Cara basically married. Now you’re business partners too? I don’t know about that.”

“Good thing is I didn’t ask you,” he said. “Didn’t even start to. You’re the one who asked. I’m just letting you know.”

“Right. Well. I wish you the best of luck with that endeavor. And hopefully whatever else has you tensed up. Because something tells me it’s not just that.”

And then his brother left, but Jace still felt irritated. Because damn him, he was right. He was right about the fact that there was something else bothering him.

It was the fact that his body seemed to have developed an irrepressible interest in Cara.

He couldn’t claim that it was sudden. It felt sudden. But it was just... He knew that she was beautiful. It was just that he had never let that matter. Because what did beauty matter? There were a lot of beautiful women. But there were very few people in his life that he cared for like he cared for her. And there was no one exactly like her. So he let all that fade to the background, and he never let it become attraction.

But there it was. Just suddenly. He was... He couldn’t stop thinking about the way that she’d said that, and the inevitable thoughts that had followed.

How much he wanted...

Hell.

He wanted her.

No. He didn’t have to let it go that far. He had a little bit of an interest there, but that was it. That didn’t mean that he wanted her. And it didn’t have to be anything too deep.

He wouldn’t let it be.

In fact, tonight he would go to the bar, meet with her and talk her plans over with her. He wasn’t going to let it be weird. He was just going to keep it the same. It was entirely possible Cara didn’t even remember saying that to him. She hadn’t acknowledged it all day. Not at all. Maybe she had even been kidding. Because he just couldn’t imagine...

Except what was becoming easier and easier to imagine was his own hands skimming over her curves.

He could remember when he had pulled her down on top of them last night. How soft she’d been.

It had been a juvenile thing to do, but the feelings that had resulted had been anything but.

And then after that...

You’ve been tempting it. Teasing it.
