“You want me?” His voice was rough and she felt it between her legs.

What was she doing? What was happening right now? He was her friend. Her best friend. Hers. And she was just telling him, and he was looking at her like he might want her too, and she wanted to run. From him and to him.

She cleared her throat. “Is that not apparent?”

He cut her off by pressing his mouth to hers, and a rush of warmth overtook her. He wrapped his arm around her waist and brought her close. And when he kissed her... It was deep. It was real, and it was the most full-on, intense moment of its kind that she imagined anyone had ever experienced. She didn’t want to talk. She didn’t want to think. She didn’t want to do anything but feel. She just wanted to feel. Feel this. Feel him.

She wanted it more than anything.

And she had to laugh, because she sort of wondered if they were being utterly themselves in this moment. If she was trying to manifest forever while he deeply denied any sort of future.

But maybe it didn’t matter, because their truth and their beliefs were coming together right in this moment, and it was resulting in a kiss, so... She supposed that was all perfect.

And maybe she would take a page out of his book. Just this once. Because the scrape of his stubble against her cheek was magic, and the slick friction of his tongue against hers was doing wild and reckless things to her insides. Because the feel of his big hands, gripping her waist, smoothing down her hip. Oh, it was her fantasy. Her moment. It was the thing... It was everything.

She started to shake.

And he was Jace, so he noticed.

“You okay?” he asked, brushing his hand over her cheek.

“I’m okay,” she said. “I just... I watched you once. Pick up a woman in the bar. The way that you put your hand on her body... I went home and I fantasized about it.”

“Fuck,” he said. “Don’t tell me things like that.”

“Why? We’re already here.”

He huffed a laugh, soft and sexy, and then he smiled. Just a little. “Well. Damned if that isn’t true.”

And then he kissed her again, and she was drowning.

She pushed her hands up underneath his T-shirt and groaned when she made contact with his hot skin. With his hard-packed muscle.

She started to pull off his shirt.

“Look, as much as I think it would be fun to do this on the bar, I think that we need to bed.”

“What?”

“Seriously. You’ve really never been with anybody?”

“Yes.” She moved her hands over his chest. “I’ve never been with anybody, and I want to be with you, and I’m feeling a little bit desperate.”

“And there will be time for hard and fast, I can assure you. I’m all for it. But, we need to do slow and thorough first. Because I take care of you. Bottom line. You’re mine, Cara. Mine to protect. And I’m gonna make this good for you. And that means we need to bed. And we need time.”

“I’m a virgin,” she said. “But I am not anuntouchedvirgin. I have a vibrator.”

“Praise the Lord, and hallelujah. But, I still want to take my time.”

“I just mean... I actually know when I’m about to come. And believe me when I tell you...”

“Save the dirty talk,” he said, pressing his thumb against her lips. “We’re gonna have me coming a whole lot earlier than either of us want.”

It was the fact that he made eye contact with her when he said that that nearly sent her over the edge. The fact that it was Jace.

HerJace.

The fact that she had looked up and seen him down by the riverbed when she’d been crying when she was just in middle school, and he looked at her with those same eyes. And now he was looking at her like this, talking to her like that.
