Wilder winced out of the corner of my eye.

I was done with this day, done with these palace grounds…done with it all.

I wanted to get my wolf back.

And I wanted to go home.

“Where are the necklace pieces?” I asked, my voice coming out choked and despondent.

Daxon growled again, like he was pissed he couldn’t make the world perfect for me. He pulled one of the pieces of the necklace out of his pocket, and Wilder stood up from the fire with the other one.

“Alright, now how do these pieces go together?” Daxon muttered, grabbing the necklace away from Wilder who was standing there like he’d been stabbed.

“I’ll do it,” Ares offered, holding out his hands. Daxon glared at him distrustfully.

“Like I’m going to let you hold Rune’s fate in your hands,” he snapped. “Why haven’t you left yet? Or better yet, why hasn’t Wilder killed you yet?”

Ares sighed, rubbing his hand down his face wearily. “Because we’ve come to an understanding. Wilder understands that since Rune is my blood match, there’s no sense trying to push me away. I’ll never stop trying to be with her.”

I shifted uncomfortably at the reminder. His teeth sinking into my neck ran through my head. How good it had felt…

Definitely not ever going to bringthatup in front of Wilder.

Daxon’s jaw had dropped…I’d never seen him look so shocked before.

His gaze went to me, and there was betrayal in his gaze…and running through his bond. Which only made me feel worse, because it wasn’t like I had any say in the blood match.

“Rune, it’s true?” he asked softly. And I could tell he was trying to keep the emotion out of his voice. He’d known Ares was claiming we had a blood match. But I guess it was another thing for me to confirm that I believed it too.

“I think so,” I answered roughly, wondering how we’d had three such perfect days…and now everything sucked.

Daxon’s eyes closed and he looked conflicted, but when he opened them again, there was not a trace of unease or anything else. “Alright, bloodsucker. Put this necklace together.”

I was like a woman possessed as I considered mounting Daxon right then and there for not making this a bigger deal. Maybe the bond was useful…he could tell when I was on the verge of losing it.

Ares tried a few different ways of putting the necklace together before one finally worked. I think I’d expected something to happen, like sparks, or the necklace to glow…but there was nothing.

“That was a bit anticlimactic,” mused Ares, as if he could read my mind. He shrugged his shoulders and handed me the necklace.

I took it, excitement and anxiety buzzing through my veins. Please work.My shoulder hurt like a bitch, and I was desperate to reconnect to my wolf.

Holding my breath, I slid the necklace on.

Nothing.

Nothing happened.

My wolf was still locked inside of me. My shoulder wasn’t healing.

If I had any tears left to cry…I would have started sobbing once again.

“It could just take some time,” Daxon cautioned, his features bleak and exhausted with failure, like I’m sure mine were.

“Yeah…that’s probably it,” I murmured before squaring my shoulders and ignoring Ares and Wilder’s equally desolate stares. The stones suddenly disconnected, and I sighed. “Can we get out of here now?”

All three of them nodded, almost in unison, and after packing up our very meager belongings…we headed towards the waiting carriage.

Good riddance.
