“Where’s my little dove?” he asked casually. “I have a gift for her.” He produced a bunch of wild flowers in his hand from around his back.

I was going to be fucking sick.

A growl thundered behind me, a sudden gust of air buffeted into me as Daxon lunged himself at Ares.

“You fucking bastard.” Daxon slammed into Ares, taking him completely off guard, the flowers ripped out of his grasp.

The pair hit the ground, tumbling so fast, they knocked into a tree. Daxon wound up on top of Ares, slamming fist after fist into his face.

“Daxon!” I bolted to his side, then threw an arm around his throat and wrenched him off Ares. “Fuck, we need him conscious to find Rune.”

Daxon shoved an elbow into my gut and ripped out of my grip. He swung toward me, throwing his palms against my chest. “What the fuck do you think I was doing?”

Anger lashed across my chest, and I shoved him back, fury burning through me.

“Lover’s squabble?” Ares asked, not appearing perturbed one bit. “Now use your words, wolf boy, and tell me where the hell Rune is before I kill you both.”

I swung toward him, snatching him by the throat, my panic taking over. “You took her, didn’t you?”

Ares shoved me off him with ease. “Rune’s missing? Why the fuck didn’t anyone tell me?”

And in a split second he darted out of the campsite, leaving behind just a wisp of his shadow.

“Where’d he go?” Daxon’s brow narrowed, a nerve twitching at the corner of his eye.

“He’s gone to try to find her I’m guessing.” I didn’t even bother explaining that we should be doing the same.

Darkness rose within me, sinking its fangs deep. The urge to give into the panic, to lose my head was strong. But that wasn’t going to help me find Rune.

I threw myself into the woods, rushing to find the bears and discover if they took her, if she went to them, or if they knew anything.

My desperation burst forward, clenching my throat, forcing me to run faster because I was certain, Rune’s life depended on it.

Daxon

Madness swallowed me.

I couldn’t stand being in my own skin as it stretched over me while my insides were on fire.Rune, where are you?

My heart pounded like it tried to break my ribs, and I couldn’t breath, couldn’t think, except for Rune. Heartache ripped across my chest, striking me like the crack of a whip. My wolf whined for her, shoving against me to come out.

Her absence stole the colors from the air, shredded me to pieces. I couldn’t bear a life without her.

Tearing my clothes off, I called to my wolf and he poured out of me with urgency, tearing skin, snapping bones. His growl darkened, turning into something primal and feral.

Rune. I’m coming for you.

I lunged into the woods even as fur still sprouted over my body. My heart felt like shards of glass, bleeding me to death from the inside out.

I didn’t get far when I inhaled her scent and I paused, drawing in a lungful of her sweet honey smell. It was faint, but it flooded me with hope that I’d find her. I jerked my head up to scour the woodland and the shadows that clung to them.

Frantically following my nose, my nostrils flared with each inhale, her scent hard to pinpoint, but I found it once more down by the river’s edge.

Desperately, I darted up and down the river, but each time, her scent faded. She hadn’t gone that way, and the same happened when I splashed across the water to the other side.

Retreating to the way I’d come, I decided that she hadn’t taken another path but stayed around camp.

Rune, where are you?
