He was staring at the water in front of him by the time I finished, shame coating his features.

“Is that all you remember?” he asked quietly, still not looking at me.

“Yes,” I answered. “Are there things missing? It still feels like there are.”

He was quiet, his usual tell when he didn’t want to answer one of my questions.

“There’s a lot. But I’m sure you will get those back soon.” He always made it seem like we were on a ticking clock. Like doomsday was just ahead.

As I went through the memories I remembered, they still didn’t change how I felt in that moment…after spending almost every second with him over the past month.

“I’m still in love with you,” I whispered, the words coming out shy and stilted, because it took a lot for me to get them out.

His head shot up so fast he almost head-butted me.

“What?” he asked incredulously.

“I’m still in love with you,” I repeated, a huge smile stretching across my face, because it felt so good to say it out loud.

“I’m so fucking in love with you too,” he breathed.

“I know,” I said with a wink.

Our lips slid together like they were never meant to be apart.

And as he moved inside of me once again…I pushed all thoughts away of what I didn’t know.

Because what I did know…was that I belonged to him.

And that was enough for now.

CHAPTER 14

DAXON

Pain flared in my chest like the point of a knife, twisting, scraping, pushing deeper the quicker Rune ran from me. And she was fast, darting through the woods, blurring in and out of the shadows. My gaze followed her long, white hair, glinting in the afternoon sunlight.

She glanced over her shoulder…eyes of shattering ice blue stared back at me.

I’d marked her as mine, and yet she ran from me. Instinct had me burning up with desperation, with unhinged craving.

Unraveling myself from my thoughts, I lunged after her.

Feet pounding the Earth, I enjoyed the run, the exhilaration of the chase, and I ran after my sweetheart as I would hunt down my prey. And when I caught her, I’d devour her, starting with that delicious cunt. I’d spread open her legs, thrust my tongue into her, feel her wriggling under me, listen to her moans. She’d twist beneath me while begging me to take her harder.

“Fuck.” She had me rattled with arousal, and I was ready to throw myself at her.

But first, I had to catch her and find out why the hell she was running in the first place.

I skidded around a tree to close the distance between us, convinced she was teasing me. She really had no idea what I had in store once I captured her.

“You won’t get far, sweetheart,” I called out after her, knowing she’d heard me, my footfalls thudding faster, harder as I scaled the hill. She moved fast like a rabbit, hopping about and I was impressed.

I shoved faster, cutting her off as she swung left, and now she was directly in my sights. Her eyes grew huge as she glanced back at me descending upon her. My skin felt tight, burning me up with my wolf pressing forward to escape. He loved the hunt, except this was about her and me. About how I was going to remind her what happened if she taunted me.

Feet away, she released a small cry, madly scrambling out of my reach, swerving left and right past the trees.

Dominance roared through me with the hunger I held for my mate. I might have kept back my wolf, but his essence pumped in my veins, propelling me forward.
