“Deal,” I confirmed, then Daxon and I retreated.

Once we left behind the alleyway, we both launched into a race back home. We exchanged glances because we knew exactly what we had to do.

“We’re going to find Rune. Fuck, we’re going to find her.” His voice boomed, and I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen so much hope and cheer coming from Daxon. He’d been in agonizing pain for weeks.

Joy and hope were beating in my chest as well, my heart close to bursting at the thought I’d have my wolf girl back. And this time, when I marked her, I’d do it right and it’d damn well stick. I just wanted Rune in my arms once more. My desperation was so great, that I refused to believe anything but that the witch was right.

Daxon was grinning, both of us running madly back to our house where we’d left the dead men in our basement.

“Are you glad I killed those three fuckers now?” I teased.

“Man, I could kiss you, but I’m saving it all for Rune.”

We flew like the wind, and for the first time in too long, it felt like something was finally going right for us.

* * *

“Areyou sure this is the way?” Daxon groaned, glancing back over shoulder.

“She said keep north on the path.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes,” I snapped. “You were practically dying from your coughing so you didn’t hear half of what she said in her instructions.”

We’d been hiking through the woods for the past hour, civilization left long behind us, and my gut twisted so tightly, I felt sick up to my eyeballs. At the same time, excitement and adrenaline pushed me to move faster through the trees…because Rune might be close.

“It’s in that direction, can you hear it?” Daxon called out, picking up speed, and I followed his outstretched arm toward the grand waterfall in the distance. The crashing water called to me.

We took off at a sprint.

“That witch better have come through, or I’ll be carving outhereyes,” Daxon warned. I didn’t care what he did to her as long as we found Rune.

Though, thinking back to us cutting out the men’s eyes still churned my stomach. Daxon didn’t seem to have an issue as he whistled to himself as he did so. I felt sick the whole time. I guessed I hadn’t reached his level of psycho yet. That was only slightly reassuring.

On top of that, he’d barely coughed since we reached the woods, and he had more energy than before, more color in his face. All things that pointed to us getting close to Rune.

Soon enough, we reached an expansive lake, and beyond that stood a monstrous wall of rock. Its surface was covered in jagged stones, the waterfall glinted in all colors of the rainbow, the water below crystal clear.

“Galeru,” I murmured. “A secret city. This has to be it. The witch had said once we reach the crystal waterfall, take out the crystal and walk into the lake and keep going until you pass the waterfall. Then we’ll find the entrance.”

“Well, let’s find out if she was telling us the truth.”

Collecting the crystal stone out of my pocket, I held it out in front of me where the sun shone through it, sending a rainbow of colors dancing across the lake’s surface. I stepped down and the water parted for me.

“Whoa, did you see that?” I gasped, unsure how this was happening.

“Of course I can see, I’m not blind. Lead us forward, Moses,” he joked. We started walking, the slick pebbles on the bottom of the lake grinding together beneath our steps.

Once we approached the waterfall, it opened up for us like a parting curtain.

That time, it was Daxon’s turn to gasp. “How the fuck did Ares gain such magic?”

“He’s been around for a long time. Let's move on.” We scrambled forward and right into a cave. The waterfall fell back down, water splashing us, so we stepped deeper into the dark.

“She could be just on the other side of this,” I whispered.

“Don’t even get me started. I feel so tightly wound on the inside, that I can’t tell if I’m going to go mental and kill the first person I see, or if I’m going to cry. Shit man, I don’t fucking cry, ever, and look at the shit that’s coming out of my mouth. Forget I said anything.” He was talking fast, his breaths speeding.
