“There is no this!” I hiss under my breath when I hear footsteps in the hall. The last thing I need is for the office gossip mill to start grinding with some inaccurate story about the two of us.

“There is!” His granite jaw sets stubbornly. “There is something here,” he hisses quietly, seeming to feel my own nervousness.

“There can’t be, Drake. I need this job. I need this promotion more than you can know.”

He nods his sleek, dark head. “To take care of your child?”

I gasp and stumble back. “How do you know that? I don’t talk about Justin at work.”

“Justin? That’s a nice name. So you have a boy. How old is he?”

“Nine. Going on thirty-five.”

He chuckles. “Yeah. I was like that at his age.”

My lips curve when I think what I young Drake was like. “You must have driven your mother crazy!”

He cocks his head, his laser-blue eyes locked on my lips, making them tingle. “Of course.”

I back-pedal away from him. “I need this promotion,” I insist. “I can’t let anything mess that up.”

“Does his dad help out? I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk about your ex.”

Lips twisting, I wrinkle my nose like I smell something bad. “That’s because there’s nothing to say. He’s not really involved in our lives.”

“He doesn’t see his son?”

“Nope. Not for at least two years. At first he kept the visits. But then he got a new girlfriend and all the sudden his visits started to get fewer and further between.”

He shakes his head and growls. “I don’t know how any man can treat his kid like that. Nothing’s more important than family.”

Now it’s my turn to snort. “I’m sorry. Who are you? I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talking about family, Drake. Seems like you like the bachelor life pretty well.”

“I’m not married and I don’t have a family. So yeah, I’m a bachelor and I like to have fun. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to have a wife and kids one of these days. I just haven’t found the right woman yet.”

“How will you know it when you find her?” I ask breathlessly, my pulse pounding in my throat.

“I’ll know.”

Trembling, I dart around him to the door. “I’ve got work to do, Drake.”

He growls and follows me, holding the door closed with one hand. “I’ll let you run away from this conversation right now, baby girl. But you can’t hide from me forever.” He backs away and I quickly open the door, desperate to escape from the stifling feeling of desire curling in my belly.

“Good luck and thank you for telling me about your ex. I’m sorry you’re having a tough time, baby girl. But if you give me a shot, I can help you.”

Whirling, I poke him in the chest. “I don’t need help. I can take care of my own family, Drake. You’re nothing to me.”

CHAPTER4

Drake

My chest still tingles where she touched me. And the burn in my gut when she told me that I was nothing to her?

Damn! She really knows how to hurt a man. Cut him down at the knees.

She’s like a Valkyrie. A fighter. Strong and wild. I moan when I picture how she’d fight to keep control in bed. It would be so much fun to try and break down that impressive control of hers until she’s screaming my name.

My dick aches and I grunt when my hand slides down to touch myself through my lounge pants. My eyes close and I sigh when Promise’s beautiful face appears in front of me, her wide eyes flashing with desire, the gold flaring up, her coral-pink lips parting as her pink tongue darts out and slowly circles the head of my shaft. Groaning, I grasp at the back of her head, twisting her long, dark red hair in my fist.
