He nodded to the package by her feet. “Come on, let’s take the boys in and we’ll go through it together.”

She bent down and grabbed the brown envelope.

A slither of unexpected excitement buzzed through her as she handed Josh the envelope. She watched as he unbuttoned the top of his shirt and slid her envelope inside his shirt. He gave her a quick wink before he climbed out of the car. She studied him as he carefully opened the passenger door next to Blaydon. His positivity was infectious.

With a spark in her step she jumped out to carry Jayden inside.

It took a few minutes, but soon Kristy and Josh were carrying each of the boys down the narrow path to the cabin at the end of the Susan and Allan’s back yard. The dull porch light was all Josh needed to open the front door. She followed him through the darkened living room. In the hall he switched on the light and together they walked in silence to the boys’ bedroom at the end of the hallway.

The room was small and consisted of two small beds on opposite walls which were separated by a small chest of drawers. Josh took Blaydon to the bed closest to them and quickly pulled down the covers on both beds. She gently laid Jaiden down on his bed and carefully took of his socks and shoes, followed by his shirt and shorts.

Kristy pulled up the covers and bent down and kissed him on the forehead.

A pale pink box on the dresser caught her eye. Her body snapped to attention when she read the gold wording.

Amanda Jane Waterford

Born - 3 March 1988

Died - 6 June 2021

Just resting

Kristy’s jaw dropped.

She could not look away. Her chin started to tremble as a slow heavy ache started to take hold in her chest.

Kristy took a couple of breaths before she walked across to Blaydon’s bed. Josh stood up for her to take his place. She sank into the softness of the bed and touched Blaydon’s fine fair hair…so like Amanda’s.

Sadness for Amanda’s sons almost overwhelmed her as she leant forward and kissed Blaydon on the forehead. She struggled to collect her thoughts as she pulled up his blanket and gave a final check on Jaiden. Kristy sat in the darkened room as her thoughts fell into place, and then she walked out of the room.

He takes Amanda’s ashes…on holiday…with him and the boys. He can’t or won’t let go of Amanda. She couldn’t imagine such a heartache.

Is that why they call it a crush? Because you stood a good chance of getting your heart crushed? She should not have kept her hopes up, or kept thinking about him over the years.

If she were truly honest with herself, she was glad he’d never been around when she’d visited Amanda. Who knew what clues Amanda might have picked up that she had a crush on her husband?

Tonight her eyes had been well and truly opened.

She saw it now, she never stood a chance with Josh. A sharp pain sliced through her chest at that thought.

It was time she put her past dreams and wishes about him to bed.

Forget him and move on.

CHAPTER9

Josh followed Kristy through to the living room where she stopped and stood by the front door before turning to face him.

In his experience, Josh understood this defence tactic and he’d used it many times himself whenever he wanted a difficult meeting or negotiation to end. He’d excelled at it. Nobody walked past him to get out of a conference room without him getting his desired result.

Except tonight. Kristy stood by the door, arms across her chest and he could see the slightest tremble of her bottom lip.

He pulled out Kristy’s brown envelope that had sat snug inside his shirt and laid it on the coffee table between them.

“Is it Amanda’s urn?”

Kristy nodded.
