Kristy ran a hand through her hair, some days were just too difficult. “The last orders? Didn’t I give that to Janelle?”
“Hello handsome,” called out Zoe.
Kristy looked across and saw Josh walk towards the stables. He waved to Zoe, but his eyes were on her.
She’d never seen Josh look more casual or sexier in her life…and she liked it. Dressed in runners, jeans and a t-shirt that fitted his broad shoulders and solid chest she hadn’t realised how much she wanted to see him, until now. And just like that, via some invisible string he reeled her up and she walked towards him and trampled on her resolve of the night before to forget him and move on.
As she drew closer to him his eyes darkened and her body quivered and he held out his hand.
“When was the last time you had a day off?” asked Josh.
“Never,” she replied, looking anxiously back at the shop.
“Come on, there’s somewhere I want to take you and I haven’t found what I’ve been looking for in Bindarra Creek, so we’re headed out of town.”
She stared at his smooth well-manicured hand and slid her rough hand, which was covered in a multitude of cuts and bruises, into his. Despite the best hand creams she could afford, her hands were never smooth as silk. It never normally worried her, but it did now. “I was going to surprise you, but you really need to be there for this.”
She felt her body respond to the sound of his voice as if he’d physically touched her. Her throat suddenly went dry.
He squeezed her hand tight and her heart started to pound. He tossed her a cheeky grin, and said, “Let’s have some fun.”
An hour later they walked into the Holiday Fun Park. For the first time in years the council had decided to spend some money on a circus and amusement stalls. First stop Josh took her to the ice-cream stand.
Allan Barnes stood at the counter and grinned at the pair of them. “Well, hello, hello. Good to see you here. What takes your fancy?”
Kristy laughed, she almost felt giddy. “I’ll have a double scoop of vanilla, please.”
“Nothing changes with you, does it, Kristy,” Allan said. “I’ve got a rocky road special, peppermint cookie dough, or a beaut newbie with café brazilian? It’s going down a treat that one. Or, for a change, and just for you, I can add a few sprinkles?”
“Thanks, Allan, I’ll keep it plain.”
“Same for me as well,” said Josh.
She reached into her pocket for her purse but Josh beat her and paid for their ice creams.
They headed towards the dodgem cars.
“I haven’t been on those for years! Want a go?” asked Josh.
Kristy didn’t look at him. She could feel her resistance to him diminishing. “I’d like to finish my treat,” she said, licking at her ice cream.
“Too sweet,” he announced and tossed his ice cream into the nearest bin.
She did a double-take. “Too sweet? Or are you watching the calories?”
From where she stood Josh Bridges didn’t carry any extra weight. He shot her a careful look, a searing hot gaze that completely shocked her. He was a father of two young boys. Scotch that, that counted for naught right now. He was here with her sending off vibes the like of which she hadn’t felt in years.
He leaned closer to her, his head almost touching hers. “Are you checking me out to find my extra bulge?”
“Could be,” she said. She surprised herself and reached out and touched his hard chest. “Give it time.”
His lips curved slightly. He grabbed her hand. “Come on, I promised you some fun and he’s just about to start.”
Together they raced across to the dodgem cars. The young kid at the gate took Josh’s money and let them in. She jumped into the nearest car and Josh in the one behind her. His car nudged hers as she fought for control. He steered effortlessly past her without a care. Kristy struggled to keep her mind on the task, being too busy checking Josh out as he did another round past her.
When she finally got going, Josh drove past her again, his smile a mile wide.Oh, so he has been checking me out.She put her foot down and nudged the back of his car. He shot her a surprised look, but sped on ahead.
It seemed to stop almost as soon as it began.
