He stepped closer, but she held up her hand to stop him.

She stared into his blue eyes and decided she needed to tell all.

“Josh, I love you and the boys and I have for a long time. I only want the best for you, but what eats at me every day, is the fact that you chose Amanda. I struggle with that. I felt a strong connection with you the moment I saw you. Didn’t you? Or have I been kidding myself all these years? Add embarrassment to that as well if you will.”

Josh let out a soft moan.

“Hear me out please, Josh. I just feel if I turn up tonight I’ll get further involved with you and the boys and it just makes life that much harder…when you leave.”

Josh took her hand and she didn’t stop him. It might be her last connection with the only man she’d ever truly loved.

“Kristy, do you remember the question you asked me the night before I married Amanda?”

“How do you know you’ve met the right one?” she whispered.

That question hung between them, just as it had ten years earlier.

Josh squeezed her hand.

“At twenty-three I didn’t quite know how to answer you. I liked you from the get-go, but I didn’t know how to handle you. You were so different from anybody I’d ever met. I look around here and see what you’ve achieved and I know I was right that night. That connection you talk about terrified me. It was like stepping into the great unknown and I still feel it. I was in awe of you then and I still am.”

Kristy let his lovely soothing words roll around in her brain. At the end of the day, they were words and nothing more. She tried to pull away, but Josh held onto her.

“Don’t get me wrong,” he continued. “I loved Amanda.”

Kristy cocked her head. “What are you really saying?”

He reached out and gently stroked her cheek.

“What did you see that night?” she asked. That question had haunted her for years. Her heart pounded.

“Energy, trust, honesty, enthusiasm…a whole heap of things I didn’t fully understand.”

Kristy could feel her body start to tremble. “And?” she asked.

Josh ran his fingers ever so gently down her face and stopped at her chin. Her body hummed at his tender touch. He lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him, and she saw the love beaming at her from his blue eyes.

“I’m willing to dive into the great unknown with you. Are you ready for that?”

With a soft moan that set her pulse racing, he reached out and pulled her towards him. His body was hard, rock solid. Josh held her tight and as her body relaxed against him a lovely sense of belonging eased throughout her being. His touch was breathtakingly gentle as his lips brushed across hers. She snuggled her body further into his and his feather-light touch tortured her. She couldn’t get any closer if she tried. Kristy let out a sigh as Josh lifted his head and she stared into eyes – they were almost heart stopping in their desire.

Shivers tickled up her spine.

He bent down and she rose to hold him, to kiss him. Then he kissed her, with a fierceness and energy that blew her mind. His hunger and excitement captured her and she felt its force from her head all the way down to her toes, and she relished every inch in between.

Josh’s hands slid to her shoulders and then he pushed her away. In the semi-darkness of early evening Josh stood away from her, his expression serious, which set every nerve in her body on edge.

“I love you, Kristy.”

She stood in awe, thrilled to hear his words. “You do?”

Kristy opened her arms wide for him and she hugged him. She knew she was letting more than Josh into her life – it was a whole family and she couldn’t wait to get started. She knew there were major decisions to be made in their lives, but they would be together.

She held him close as they walked up to his SUV and into their future.
