"Yes," he says shortly, throwing back his shot.

I blink, looking down at the shot. "Honestly, it looks like you could use it. Besides, it's a lot of money."

The man laughs dryly, and I recognize the pain behind it immediately. "I just closed a seven figure sale today. I'll manage, I promise."

"Well, if you're sure…" I lift the glass, taking a moment to smell the alcoholic goodness before throwing it back.

I'm surprised that the man looks pleased with my acceptance of his gift. It's the first time I've seen a smile cross his face since he's entered the bar.

"Okay, spill," I demand, taking the shot glasses and putting them down behind the counter with the other dirty glasses.

He crosses his arms, inspecting me. "What do you want to know?"

I give him an incredulous look. "You look like someone just ran over your dog and left a shit on your front doorstep."

I seriously hope Tara likes me for my smart mouth because unfortunately, that's what everyone is probably going to get.

"Wife left me for my best friend… and took the dog actually."

My mouth pops open. "She didn't? What a bitch. The dog, really?"

He nods, his jaw tightening. "Casper was my little man. Rescued him from the animal home when he was a puppy."

I lean against the bar. "Okay, hear me out. WeLegally Blondethis shit, and get Casper back. I'll be Elle Woods, and you be the chick Jennifer Coolidge played."

A laugh bursts out of his mouth, shocking me. "Sweetheart, I'm in the suit here. Clearly, I'd be the better Elle Woods."

I snicker, grabbing a lock of my hair. "Blonde hair trumps brown, though."

The man holds out his hand. "I'm Devin."

I shake it back. "Nice to meet you, Devin. I'm Rylee."

Devin sits back, visibly relaxed. "I haven't seen you here before," he says matter-of-factly.

"Ah," I start, grabbing a glass of water for each of us. "It's my first night."

His eyebrows shoot up. "Really? Never would have picked it."

"That's because I'm good at what I do. I've spent a lot of time in bars. It's my comfort zone. I'm not an alcoholic though. I just hang with them."

Devin looks me over with a calculated stare. "A different crowd, I'm guessing. You don't look like you grew up here."

"Right again."

"And you ended up here? Poor soul."

I laugh, giving him a grin. "I actually like it here. Even with that stupid haunted lake."

"Oh, you've been to the Lake. What an adventure."

"Devin, if you give me any more attitude, I'll have to start charging you smartass tax on your drinks."

Devin scoffs playfully, crossing his arms. "And you know what? Tara would absolutely support that."

"You know Tara?" I ask, taking a sip of water.

"Everyone knows Tara. She's a legacy around here. Speak of the Devil…"
