“Missiles.”

He sat up straighter. “What kind of missiles?”

“The kind terrorists can use to kill a large number of people.”

For a moment he sat there, then closed his eyes. “I know someone who knows things. His name is Benny Stocks. As I told Dean, I’ll need to be at any meet with him. He’s jumpy.”

“I’m assuming Mr. Moore got involved because you’re roommates?”

“No, Gage came to me. I’m not sure how Dean found him.”

A sudden pounding on the door reverberated through the room.

Ophelia rose. “Excuse me. I’ll be right back.”

She stepped into the hall and her commander’s face was thunderous. “What kind of hornet’s nest did you kick?”

“What?” She caught sight of a man standing at the end of the hall. “Oh, damn. Military’s involved?”

“That it is,” he bit out. “General Michael Harkness, a three-star.”

“Who’s he here for?”

“Dean Teller and Jessica Scott.”

This guy probably had the country’s highest security clearance. He thought he could walk into LAPD Metro and flash his three stars and they’d all genuflect. Well, she wasn’t going to roll over. “Oh…as in they’re working for him?”

“I don’t know.” Her commander scowled. “He’s not the sharing type. He is just demanding they be released.”

When he started over to them, Ophelia braced herself.

The general muttered a curse. “I don’t have all damn day, Commander Mills. Where are my people?”

“They’re not being held, sir.”

His head snapped around and she was pinned by his piercing eyes. “Who are you?” His expression sharpened.

“Officer Ophelia Barr, sir, SWAT. I was investigating the evidence of military weapons and missile parts we found in a warehouse owned by The National Boys.”

“And you’re the one who discovered these weapons and the missile parts, as well as dragged all of the principal people into Metro?”

She met his gaze head on. “Yes, sir. I was the one. At the moment, you’re impeding my investigation.” Commander Mills groaned.

General Harkness stared at her for a moment, a calculating look in his eyes. Then his brows knitted. “Commander, can I have a word with you?”

She watched them converse, steamed that she was having to wait for this guy to chew out her boss. She just wanted to get back on the job.

Finally, the three-star up and left. Great, now she was going to get her ass chewed. The last thing she was going to do was tuck her tail between her legs.

“Before you read me the riot act, I want to lodge a complaint. This is taking up valuable time.” Someone assembling the missiles was scary enough, launching them would be devastating.

“Could you pipe down for a second—”

“No. I know what I’m doing—”

“Barr, can it, now.” He barked, “That’s an order.”

Her jaw clicked together as she fumed.
