I nod slowly. He lets me go reluctantly. For a second, I’m not sure my plan worked, but he doesn’t sink back down onto the mattress. I get up and straighten my skirt.

The academy’s uniform consists of navy shirts and grey skirts for girls, and the same color shirts with grey pants for guys. They also have unisex grey vests and blazers, but both of those items are itchy as hell, and I refuse to wear them. Though, I have to admit, my guys make the blazers look good, and Oscar even looks good in the itchy vests which he claims aren’t itchy at all.

Oscar leaps out of the bed, and I watch him dress in a whirlwind of motion before he darts into the bathroom. It’s kind of impressive how suddenly he went from no-desire-to-move to superhero-speed quick-change. I guess it’s been a while since I spent time alone with him. Usually, we’re all together, and as much as everyone seems content with that arrangement it could probably use some shaking up every once in a while.

I wait by the bedroom door, and he takes my hand when he comes out of the bathroom.

“How do I look?” he asks.

“Like a guy who’s getting lucky tonight,” I tell him.

“Good answer.”

Chapter Two

Cheryl

EverettlooksupwhenOscar and I walk out of the mansion, hand in hand. His thick, black hair has been gotten longer since I met him, and he hasn’t bothered to have it styled. It gives him a darker, edgier look than he had a few months ago. He was the popular guy around the academy when I got here, and the Alpha of Alphas. The second part still applies. No one challenges Everett. The popular part faded away when he stopped throwing parties. He decided to buck trends and grow his hair out after I made an offhand comment about how good he looked with it longer.

I must admit, it wouldn’t matter if he shaved it all off tomorrow. My heart would still skip a beat every time I locked eyes on him. He’s one of my true mates, after all. He feels like my destiny, because he is, but that doesn’t mean he can’t piss me off.

A tiny puff of smoke leaves his lips and I glimpse down at his hand. I see the cigarette he tries to sneakily discard by the side of the gate. What the hell, Everett? My stomach starts to twist into knots. It’s been months since he quit.

He told me he didn’t miss the habit, and I’ve never smelt or tasted it on him since.

I see the guilt in his dark blue eyes when his gaze locks with mine. It only lasts a second, but it’s enough to make my worry dig its heels in. I can’t let this slide.

It’s bad enough that Oscar’s hiding something.

I turn my gaze to Noah, but he’s too busy frowning at Everett to notice.

They’ve been arguing.

There’s serious tension hanging in the air out here, and it only escalates as we approach.

Everett straightens, acts like he wasn’t just slipping back into a bad habit while he was out here arguing with our Beta. In the past, Oscar smoked and drank to excess because Everett was his Alpha, and those were his vices. Being an Omega, he got addicted to both. Everett quit to help Oscar do the same. He can’t afford to back-slide. It’ll affect Oscar if he does, and he damn well knows that.

“We’re late,” Everett says.

“Like you care,” Oscar says with a snort.

He probably doesn’t, but it takes focus away from the fact that he was out here smoking. I’m so mad I can’t form words. I glower, he ignores it, and we get moving.

The academy isn’t far, but we’re definitely going to be late to class and I already know I’m too pissed at Everett to let him walk away without asking what the hell he was doing smoking.

Oscar doesn’t even joke about it. He knows it would make me angrier. He’s definitely picking up on my mood. Omegas can feel other people’s emotions. Even if I didn’t look ready to rip someone’s head off, he could tell I was mad.

We get to the school gates, and I let go of Oscar’s hand.

He pouts silently but doesn’t say a word when I tap Everett’s shoulder.

Noah looks at Oscar, and I nod to them. “Go. We need a minute.”

Everett grunts in protest, but he stays where he is.

I wait for Noah and Oscar to disappear from sight to give Everett my attention.

He sighs and leans against the wall by the gate. “It doesn’t mean anything.”
