Irestmyheadon my arms and let my eyelids drift shut as our history professor drones on and on in a monotone pitch about the deeds of our illustrious ancestors who’ve since become our gods.

There’s no way in hell I’m going to get through this class without drifting off. It’s hard enough to feign focus on a normal day. After I’ve tossed and turned half the night, afraid to let sleep take me in case the dreams come back, it’s practically impossible.

I stifle a yawn. I’m about to pass the hell out.

I lift my head and it drops back down.

Fuck it. What’s the worst that could happen?

I blink awake what feels like seconds later, and everything feels different. The classroom has gone still. Everyone’s frozen in place around me. Everyone, but the one person who’s absent from this class ever since she tried to kill my mate.

Bianca smiles at me from the seat next to mine. “Finally. I thought you’d never get here.”

She looks about the same as she did when I last saw her. Kind of homicidal and might be pretty if she stopped scowling. She’s sort of naturally tanned, and her make-up is that sort of no-effort-natural look that clearly took two hours with an airbrush gun and fuck knows what else. Her long, dark hair is up in a high ponytail, and hanging poker straight. Honestly, what’s the point of straightening your hair if you’re only going to tie it back?

“You’re dead,” I tell her, wondering why I’m seeing her. I’ve barely thought about her since she died.

“No shit,” she snaps. “I’m fucking trapped here! You have to help me.”

I raise an eyebrow at her. “Help you? After everything you did? Are you serious? Forget it.”

She nostrils flare and suddenly she seems extra homicidal. I edge my chair away from her.

“Oh, suit yourself,” she says, leaning back and crossing her arms. “You’ll regret saying no to me. I’ll have a long hard think about what I’ll say to you when you come begging for my help.”

I roll my eyes. She hasn’t changed one little bit.

“But seriously, Bianca, what are you doing in my dream?” I ask, wondering if I have some deep-buried guilt over taking a bad picture of her and holding on to it for leverage.

Nah. She snuck into Noah’s bedroom and took a half-naked picture of Cheryl while she was sleeping, and she didn’t hold it for leverage, she immediately sent it to the entire student body. She deserves to rot in hell. She doesn’t deserve to be sitting here asking for my help.

“Why the hell should I tell you anything?” she snaps, refusing to look at me.

Whatever this is, I can’t be bothered with it. I get up and walk away from her.

I seriously need to wake up. This dream sucks ass.

I walk past the rows of frozen in time students and the classroom starts to turn into a forest.

Specifically, the stretch of land out back of Everett’s inherited mansion.

I pause when the ground crunches under my feet. I turn and find the classroom is gone. The forest has taken its place. Bianca’s gone, at least. I let out a relieved sigh. Then pain ripples through my body as I push away the sudden compulsion to shift form. I drop to my knees and stare at the sky above. The moon is full. I can’t escape this.

My clothes start to tear as my muscles convulse.

I’m about the shift form, and I can’t do a damned thing to stop it.

Chapter Five

Oscar

Aninhumanscreamtearsfrom my throat as I fight against what’s happening. The pain is excruciating as I start to shift and stop, start and stop. My body feels like it’s being ripped to pieces, but I can’t allow myself to shift. My wolf tried to trick me into thinking things were fine, but they’re not. I’ve slowly allowed him to take me over and I’ve stayed in control every damn time.

He let me think the past was murky, muddied by my addictions.

It wasn’t. I’ve always blacked out when I shifted. My wolf has always been feral. He just let me think he wasn’t after I punished him with no access for a few long years. He wanted me to be fooled so I’d continue to let him out, to let him gain control of me. That’s not happening anymore.

I won’t let him use me like that.
