Her eyebrows shoot up before she unwraps the bar and takes a bite.

“Mmm. Oh, I so needed that.”

“We should get going,” I repeat, hoping Carter’s in the mood to listen this time.

“Sure,” Carter says. “You want to come with us? You’re headed into Wolf Creek, right?”

“I am,” she says. “But I’ll be there too early if I head over now. Meeting a guy about a thing. I have supplies to hunt for in these woods. I’m a glamorist, mostly. Blood magic isn’t my forte. Potion making is so much cheaper if you can find the ingredients in the wild.”

“Okay, well it was nice meeting you …”

“Shannon Porter,” she introduces herself, putting her nutbar into her other hand and holding out the right one.

Carter takes it. “Carter Blackwell. The moody one over there is Silas Crane.”

“Nice to meet you, hot shifters Carter and Silas. Maybe we’ll see each other again one day, whenyou’rewearing clothes andI’mnaked.” She shrugs as she climbs back onto her branch.

Carter laughs. “Maybe we will.”

She starts humming under her breath between bites of her nutbar.

I escort Carter away. He still seems amused when we’re walking back in the direction of the river.

“She was kind of fun,” he says.

“She was crazy. You just like that she was complimentary.”

“It’s nice to have random women appreciate you for your looks.”

I roll my eyes. “We have a mate.”

“And Rachel’s the most perfect woman on the planet,” Carter adds. “That witch back there just got to admire from a distance, she doesn’t get to touch.”

“How did you spot her anyway?”

“I heard her,” he says. “She was dreaming about sex before she woke up. It was kind of funny. Then I looked up and saw her passed out on the branch with that blood and I thought she might be hurt.”

“She’s a witch, Carter.”

“So is Rachel.”

“We know Rachel’s an earth witch. We have no idea about that girl back there.”

“Relax. She wasn’t Dark Arts. She was wondering if she’d be able to magic up a shifter boyfriend when she realized we weren’t part of her dream, then she remembered she’s a glamorist. Which means she can make charms and potions, but she can’t do anything close to what Rachel does. She’s attracted to shifters, too, so, she’s not one of those witches who hate our kind. She wasn’t a threat.”

Carter seems pretty pleased with himself when he’s done with his little explanatory speech.

“It was still risky while we’re out here alone and the rest of our pack don’t know where we are.”

He pulls a face. “It wasn’t a big deal. You wouldn’t have ignored her if you thought she was hurt, either. Don’t pretend you would.”

I let out a sigh. He’s probably right.

“Just stay in your wolf form if we come across anyone else on the way back. I’ll shift if it’s necessary, but one of us should be ready to attack.”

He shifts as if I just asked him to and takes off back toward the creek.

I shift and chase him through the woods toward the sound of rushing water.
