He still has his boots in his other hand, which he just seems to notice.

Shaking his head, he shuts the pan cupboard and leaves the room.

I make sure the door is locked and I close the kitchen blinds.

The house is secure, and everyone’s home.

It’s time to get some rest.

Chapter Twenty-One

Rachel

Iwakeupatthe sound of a phone buzzing somewhere in the room, and the urgent need to use the bathroom creeps up on me a second later, after I’ve made the decision to ignore the phone.

Ugh. Typical. I haul my naked ass out of the warm comfy bed to answer my call of nature.

The hallway floor feels cold, and the sensation as I creep across it definitely does the heavy lifting when it comes to waking me all the way up. Going back to bed would feel crazy by the time I’m done in the bathroom. Especially since I’ve done nothing but sleep since I got home.

Well, almost nothing but sleep.

I decide to grab clothes and hit the shower, which means going back into the room I share with my Alpha. I find Adrian passed out cold on top of the covers in his underwear. He’s been watching over me since I got back from Cheryl’s, so I’m guessing he hasn’t slept much at all.

I hear another buzzing sound and I realize it’s coming from the closet.

My purse is in there when I open the doors, and it’s definitely my phone that’s making all the noise.

Kind of weird considering my guys are all home. Hardly anyone else ever messages me.

I see Amanda in class, and I just got back from Cheryl’s place.

Oh, Goddess, I hope Cheryl didn’t run into more trouble after I left!

I scramble to get the phone out of its hiding place, ready to toss on clothes and teleport straight back there if my best friend still needs me. My heart starts to race as I pull the device out of the purse and unlock the screen. A number I don’t expect stares back at me.

A ball of dread forms in my stomach. Why would my parents be calling me?

As far as they’re concerned, I’m away at college with no reason to come back to town until my degree is earned and my place in society is well established.

The date on the screen reminds me it’s Christmas Eve, and I know how much my mom and dad enjoy that human holiday, but even so, I can’t shake the feeling that it’s not a social call.

They wouldn’t phone me to wish me happy holidays. They didn’t even call on my birthday.

I check my messages, but they haven’t left any voicemails or texts.

There’s no clue to why they’re calling.

I set the phone down and pick Adrian’s T-shirt off the carpet. I know if I don’t call them back, I’ll only make my mom ask more questions when I do eventually speak to her, and that’s the last thing I need.

Since the night Adrian marked me, I became a hybrid and accepted three mates as my own. Then, I started my own coven after pissing off some local Dark Arts witches.

I don’t think any of that information would please my traditional mother who thinks shifters are the lowest form of life, and the only coven for any self-respecting witch is the Central Coven of America.

She and my father have both been serving the CCA their entire lives, both of them now in senior level roles of high standing and power, which undoubtedly helped them climb the ladder in their respective human careers.

I slip quietly out of the room and head downstairs to the couch.

The thought of calling my parents back makes me groan, but I tell myself they’re probably only calling over something that doesn’t really matter, like what was my final score in Math at high school because the neighbors have been bragging about their kid and my mom wants to get her facts right.
