“Thank you.” I lean in and kiss her.

I won’t see any spirits tonight, and I get to spend hours alone with Rachel.

My nerves dissolve. I don’t know what I was worrying over.

“So where are we headed?” Rachel asks. “Because I don’t think I could manage any more food …”

“Oh, it’s more fun than eating,” I tell her as I open the front door. “But that’s the only clue you get until we’re there.”

“Mysterious,” she says as she steps onto the porch.

I close the door and lock it behind us, looking at the extra key that belongs to me until the morning.

“I promise it’ll be worth it.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Rachel

Asprettyassnowwould be, I like that Wolf Creek’s winter feels like fall. There’s a crispness to the air tonight but it’s not too cold to be out here, walking hand-in-hand with one of my mates.

I get to admire the Christmas trees and lights in the windows and yards as we pass, and the whole town feels like it’s embraced the spirit of the season. I’m so busy enjoying the walk that I don’t notice the fair is closed until we pass the gates.

Huh. I kind of thought that’s where we were going.

The fair is basically the only place to go for fun in this town. If that’s closed, I can’t think what else Silas could have meant.

“You okay?” he asks, when I stumble slightly in my heels.

“Yeah, just … where are going, exactly?” I ask, kind of confused.

“You’ll see. It’s not far,” he tells me, clearly intent on keeping up the surprise.

I follow along, curious to find out where he’s leading us.

When we stop outside a building I recognize, my mouth drops open.

This is where he tried to take me on our first date, after dinner.

It was closed, and it looked like it had been closed for a really long time.

“You remember?” he asks, raising an eyebrow as if he’s checking.

“Of course,” I tell him. “It was our first date.”

He brings takes his keys out and goes to the door.

I watch in surprise as he unlocks it.

He smiles at me. “Give me a second.”

He disappears inside and the lights come on.

“Oh my Goddess,” I whisper, my eyes going wide.

He holds the door open. “Come on in.”

“How …?” I start, shaking my head. I don’t have the words. They drift away as I step inside and take in the gleaming surfaces and the gorgeous oak floor.
