“Sorry, that was completely unexpected,” I tell them, my voice shaking a little.

“You did good,” Adrian tells me, giving me a hug.

My eyes are getting watery, but I do my best to hold back the tears, so I don’t actually cry on his shoulder. He’s wearing a dress shirt. It looks nice.

Unfortunately, I forget I’m wearing a lot more makeup than usual.

When I move back, there’s a patch of silvery power on his shirt.

“Crap,” Carter says. “I forgot the setting spray at the end. That’s not supposed to happen.”

“It’s fine,” Adrian tells him, holding my gaze. “Rachel? Are you …”

He cuts off when I blink. A single tear breaks free and rolls down my cheek.

He reaches out to wipe it away. “I’m sorry you had to do that.”

Carter’s arms wrap around me from behind.

“You’re okay,” he murmurs, as his hands move up and down my bared arms.

I’m soothed almost instantly, the sudden rush of emotion caused by the arrival of Paul’s parents dampening until it feels like it happened a long time ago.

“Thank you,” I whisper, turning in Carter’s arms to wrap my arms around him and hug him close.

Adrian’s arms go around us both. I feel so safe and warm and calm in their embrace.

I don’t want the hug to end, but Adrian breaks his side of it after a few sweet seconds have passed.

I move back a little, but Carter refuses to let me go.

“I think Adrian’s really into the dress,” he murmurs, starting to smile.

Turning, I see Adrian has turned away from us, and he’s adjusting himself.

If I’d expect any of my mates to get hard after a few seconds of fully clothed contact, it would be Carter. It’s unusual for Adrian to get aroused quite so quickly.

When I turn back to Carter he shrugs.

“I told you the back of this dress was spectacular,” Carter says.

I roll my eyes, but I can’t help smiling. “As long as you like it.”

“Like it? Who said I liked it? I love it.”

He’s too cute. I take his hand. “Come on, you promised we’d watch Christmas movies until dinner.”

“Well, we should see how long dinner’s going to take first, though, right?”

Adrian turns back to us. I can tell he’s hiding his arousal but considering Silas would miss out again if we started something right now, I’m willing to let it slide.

“Dinner might be a couple of hours. Silas said he’d roast some peanuts and make hot cocoa if you wanted a snack.”

“Oh, that sounds really good,” I tell him.

“Is there no ginger cake left?” Carter asks.

“You should know the answer to that considering you finished it off last night,” Adrian tells him.
