“Don’t worry about that right now. You’re in a hurry, I can tell. Go do what you need to do. When you have the roses come back, and I’ll lead you to the right place.”

“Thank you.”

Chapter Forty-Seven

Rachel

Afterafewdaysof comforting oblivion, passing the time snuggling with my mates on the couch and resting in bed with Carter, I know it’s time to wake up, and I don’t just mean physically. Lying to Paul’s parents felt like the only solution at the time, but, really, I made it harder to confess the truth and that’s all I want to do.

It’s what we should have done when it happened, and it’s what I need to do now.

There are only so many times Carter can calm me with his touch before it starts to feel like I’m draining all his energy and all it’s doing is keeping me separated from my feelings.

I can’t avoid reality forever.

I slip out of Carter’s grasp and inch my way across the bed.

He’s still sleeping, and I don’t want to wake him.

I stop moving when he moans lightly, but when I glance back at him, I can see he’s still out.

Slipping out of the bed at Adrian’s side, I pick Blue Fox up off the floor and put him under Carter’s outstretched arm. My mate hauls the stuffed toy close.

I hold my breath, but he doesn’t wake up.

Leaving the room, I seek out Adrian.

My decision’s been made, but he’s my Alpha as well as my mate. I need to convince him that it’s what’s right for our pack. He seemed so impressed with the solution my panicked brain slapped together when Paul’s parents appeared on our doorstep.

I’m not sure how he’ll react to this change of heart.

I stop on the last stair, gaze on the front door.

I’m not sure how the Winters’ found me. They could have cast a locator spell, but I don’t know how they would have gotten something of mine to do that. They didn’t know me anywhere near well enough to do it without using a physical object.

I guess if they knew Paul was with me, they probably knew where he was taking me. Even if they didn’t, my mom knows, and they already paid her a visit. She would have told them if they asked. Anything to appear helpful.

All they would have needed to do when they got here was check for signs of magic. That would have brought them to my door. It could also have brought them to Amanda, or one of the other students of the academy, but this is the closest house on the road into town with a witch living in it, and most of the other students will be at home right now for winter break so it’s not like they’d have too many locations to check out.

Yeah, that’s probably how they did it.

If I didn’t plan on owning up to what happened, I could breathe a sigh of relief, because that would make what I already told them make even more sense than it already did. But if they’d tried spells to locate their son, and me, then they already know I’m lying.

Right at this moment, I’m not sure what’s worse.

I should probably stop thinking about it before I end up crawling back into bed for the rest of the year, and a good portion of next year, too.

I move across the hallway, passing the front door. I can hear voices in the kitchen. Silas and Adrian.

I hesitate for a couple of seconds, not wanting to interrupt.

“We can’t,” Adrian says.

“I didn’t saywe,” Silas grumbles. “I said I need to do this, Adrian. Me. On my own.”

“You’re not doing this on your own.”

“Silas is not doing what on his own?” I ask, as I push the door open and step into the room.
