The love and joy that spilt into my heart was so intense. I didn’t know what to do with myself. Immense pride took over me at hearing my son’s first word.

I hated to admit but Brianna had been right. I couldn’t imagine having missed this big milestone for Michael.

Our sweet father and son moment was ruined by my phone.

“It’s 7pm on a Saturday, Frank. This better be good.” I didn’t bother greeting my lawyer properly.

“Sorry about that but this couldn’t wait. We could lose the custody battle.”

“What? You said this was an easy win this morning.”

“That’s what I thought. But she has a strong case.” He explained. “She is more stable than you are. She doesn’t have a high pressure job that would keep her from Michael. She doesn’t have to go from country to country every other week. A judge will look more favorably upon her.”

“That’s bullshi—” I looked down at my son, “bull crap. She doesn’t spend any time with her son. She didn’t even suggest visiting hours until a month ago.”

“I’m just telling you what we are working with here Gabriel. A judge doesn’t care how much you make. She wants to see that you can offer Michael stability. Not just thrust him to nannies.”

Just when I thought everything was falling into place.

“So what do I do?”

“Stability. We need to show the judge that you are rooted and centered. You already have the financial aspect covered.”

“How the fu—frick do I do that?”

“Work less hours. Find a new wife. Work from home. Any of the above.”

“I’m not getting married again. And I can’t work less hours.”

“Do you want to keep your son or not?”

I had hired Frank because he was no nonsense. He didn’t beat around the bush and he didn’t waffle.

“Fine.” I hung up the phone and put Michael back down.

What the hell was I going to do now?

My phone rang again. “Can you believe it? I am going to be a married man.” Dominic Harrison, my long time friend and colleague shouted from the other end of the call.

“Trust me it’s not all it’s cracked out to be.” I leaned back into my leather chair and looked to the ceiling.

“Just because your marriage ended in bitter divorce doesn’t mean mine will. Besides, I am marrying my best friend.”

“How lovely.”

I didn’t mean to be an asshole but I had bigger things to worry about.

“What’s wrong? You’re being more of an asshole than usual.”

“What else but the bane of my existence for the last several months.”

“I know she is the mother of your child and all but she is a bitch. I don’t know how Michael came out of a witch like her.”

“It’s a wonder to me as well.” I groaned. “Now I need to either cut my work hours or find someone to marry in the next two weeks before everything heads to court.”

Dominic was silent on the other end of the line. “Only if you could hire a wife.”

“It won’t work. The judge would be able to smell the bullshit. If I’m to marry someone it would need to be believable. Not some random off the street.”
