“So are you? Or aren’t you?”

“Married? Yeah. I got married last month.”

I stopped chopping my lettuce. “To who? Are you in love with the guy?”

She scoffed in my face, her light green eyes looking a little less wild now. “No. I did it so I didn’t need to testify against him.”

“What do you mean testify?”

“Franco, my supplier, got in trouble with the feds. I saw what I shouldn’t have seen so he married me. He’s locked away for a few years but at least it won’t be maximum prison time.”

“What have you got yourself wrapped into? You can’t be serious right now.”

“What?” She said a little taken aback by my outburst. “I’m not hurting anybody. Besides, I didn’t do anything that can get me locked up.”

“You were literally arrested two hours ago. What has gotten into you? Last time I saw you, you said you wanted to be clean. You were doing so well.”

“Well?” She stood from her seat and stormed her way toward me. “I was a fucking waitress working minimum wage and living on my daughter’s couch. I had waited on pompous bimbos that thought they were better than me. I wasn’t doing well Brianna. I was fucking miserable.”

“You’re using again aren’t you?” I stared at her. I already knew the truth. She smelt of booze and piss. I had seen the look in her eyes.

“I’m clean.”

My heart sank with disappointment. The least she could do was admit it.

“No you’re not. You’ve been drinking and your eyes were dilated. My best guess is you are going to start getting the itch to get your next fix in the next few hours.”

I watched her features harden and her eyes become harsh lasers. “You think you’re better than me don’t you?”

I shook my head. “I never said that. You need help mom. You need to go back to reh—”

“What part of I’m fine don’t you understand?” She raised her voice. “Did I take a line? Yeah. But I was stressed. I needed a breather.”

“Mom, please. You need help.”

“What I need is for you to stay out of my business.”

I was about to say something when the blaring of my phone cut me off. I looked at the name and groaned internally.

What did he want?

“I need to take this.” I excused myself and went to my room. “Hello?”

“I need you to come to the penthouse. It’s important.”

“It’s a Sunday Mr Farrington. I'm off.”

“I wouldn’t call if it weren’t important Miss Scott. Please.”

This was the first time I heard the word please exit out of Gabriel’s mouth.

“Fine. But I need to be home after two hours. I have a situation.”

“Good. See you in a bit.”

He hung up the phone and I nearly threw mine at the wall. Dealing with my mother was no easy feat. I didn’t want to leave her alone but this was the job I had signed up for.

Thirty minutes later I was standing in the living room of Gabriel’s home. I was feeling nervous about leaving my mother but she had promised to stay put until I got back.
