“Thank you for coming.” Gabriel walked down the stairs in a pair of shorts and white polo. I had never seen him so laid back. He was always in suits and ties. This was a welcome change. “Please.” He said as he motioned for me to take a seat.

I sat down on the couch and looked at him.

“I’m not going to beat around the bush here. I need you to marry me.”

“Excuse me?”

Could this day get any more complicated?

DEALS WITH THE DEVIL

Brianna

I blinked. My brain was trying to catch up with the current reality.

“Excuse me?”

“Are you hard of hearing?” Gabriel frowned. “I said I need you to marry me.”

I blinked again, completely dumbfounded.

“I’m sorry,” I let out a nervous laugh. “Are you proposing to me?”

“Yes.” His face was completely serious. No hint of a smile, though to be fair Gabriel never smiled. At least not around me.

“You’ve lost your mind. Did the workload finally fry your brain? Because this,” I gestured to him, “has to be some kind of joke.”

“I can assure you Miss Scott I don’t joke.”

“Then you must have lost your mind. The last time we talked you practically called me a gold digger and assumed I blew up your life on purpose. Now you call me here to propose? You don’t like me enough to converse with me for more than five minutes let alone love me enough to marry me.”

“Love has nothing to do with our little arrangement. This is strictly business.” His hazel eyes bored into me like he could see right through me. “Believe me, if there were anyone else I would ask them. Like I said to you before, you are not my type.”

His little jab annoyed me but I swallowed down the petty remark that threatened to slip past my lips. “Look Mr Farrington, I have already had a long day. The last thing I need is you toying with me. Now if this has nothing to do with Michael I would like to leave please. I have urgent matters that need attending to.”

I stood from my seat and made my way toward the elevator.

His hand shot out and grabbed onto my wrist. A strange bubbling feeling came to my stomach, my eyes darting to his hand on my skin.

“I’m going to lose Michael.” His voice was tight and sounded almost painful. “Please, just hear me out. You are the only person that could help me out of this.” He dropped my hand and pleaded with me to sit down.

I nodded silently. My mind still flustered from his touch.

It was nothing. He had just touched my wrist.

So why did I feel so…out of sorts.

“Franco, my lawyer, says that Adriana has a good case. She could likely win full custody of Michael. She has the stability which I don’t have and with the divorce settlement she’s practically set for life.”

My heart ached for him. I could see the pain behind his eyes, though he did his best to conceal it.

“And how does marrying me help you?”

“It would show I have stability. It would show that I can offer Michael a good home environment.”

“But last I checked your divorce isn’t finalized. So how on earth do you plan on marrying me? Polygamy is illegal in Chicago.”

“I sign on the dotted line next Thursday. Then I’m out. I’m no longer tied to Adriana legally.”
