She continued on, “I love Gabriel. I have loved this man for eight years. But since he took over for his father as CEO things have been tough. The life of a Farrington comes with many pressures especially when you marry into the family rather than being born into it. What Alister and I have is—”

“Adriana, you don’t have to justify your affair to me. To be quite frank with you I don’t care. My job is to care for Michael. Whether you live up to your vows of loyalty and honesty is on you.”

She let out a fake soft laugh. “What Alister and I have is real and I love him. But you need to understand my position here.”

She grabbed onto my hands as if pleading. Her bright caramel eyes pierced into mine but I could see the mask over them. The woman had been caught red handed and she was trying to save face. She was trying to tug at my heart strings so I can empathise with her. Unfortunately for her I didn’t.

My father cheated on my mother and I watched the way it broke her. I watched the way the drugs became medication for her depression. I saw the way she questioned her worth and value after it all.

I had no sympathy for cheaters, regardless of if they have a ‘good reason’ or not.

“Adriana, I am here for Michael. What goes on in your marriage is none of my business.” I detached my hands from hers. “If you would excuse me. I have to go and make Michael’s food.”

I excused myself and walked to the kitchen.

A sudden weight fell onto my chest as I walked toward the marble tiled kitchen. The discovery of Adriana’s affair stirred up something inside of me. Something I had not thought about in over a decade. Then my mind settled on a person I gave very little thought to.

Gabriel Farrington.

A wave of sympathy and sadness washed over me at the thought of him not knowing what was going on with his wife.

No. This is none of my business. I needed to stay out of it. My inner voice tried to counsel me.

I had one job and one job only. And that did not include me being a snitching Sally.

THE TRUTH IS FREEDOM

Gabriel

“Adriana I don’t understand why you would want us to change nannies. As far as I know she has been great for Michael.”

“I know but I think maybe it’s time we get someone else.” Adriana whined again, “she’s been giving me strange vibes lately.”

I rolled my eyes. My wife was overly dramatic.

“What vibes Adriana?”

She had been on this topic since last night. It was like she had grown a dislike for the woman overnight. I rarely spoke to the girl but I knew she did her job well. Michael was comfortable with her which was rare for my son. He didn’t take to people easily. I think he got that characteristic from me. I was the broody loner of the two of us. Adriana often hated it. But I didn’t like talking to people. Majority were either moochers, stupid or liars. You could also get the occasional one who had all three.

“Just vibes Gabriel.” I could hear the irritation in her voice. “I think she may want you and it makes me uncomfortable. One of the housemaids told me that she saw her staring at your portrait in the study.”

I massaged the side of my temple. This conversation was giving me a headache.

“Isn’t that girl some kind of asexual?” I was half joking.

Adriana let out a little growl. “I’m serious Gabriel. This woman is trying to make a move on you and you are making jokes right now. Can you at least put my feelings into consideration?”

I opened my mouth to respond to her but was cut off by some knocking at my door.

“Adriana, we will discuss this when I get home. I have a meeting I need to attend.”

“But Gabriel…”

“If it makes you feel any better I don’t have any attraction towards Brianna. She is like any other employee to me. You have nothing to worry about.” I did my best to calm her nerves. The woman was the farthest thing from my type.

She was silent for a moment. “Okay. We’ll talk about it at home. I love you.”

Her words threw me for a second before I recovered.
