Partway through the movie Ava had to walk out of the room to take a call so I hit pause.

“I can’t believe you’re engaged to Gabriel Farrington, Scott.” Axel popped a piece of popcorn into his mouth. “And here I thought you didn’t believe in love.”

I looked at him funny. “What do you mean?”

He shrugged his eyes looking me over. “Nothing. It’s just this,” he gestured to the penthouse, “that.” He pointed to the ring on my finger, “it just doesn’t seem like you. You aren’t this flashy person. You aren’t into the whole glitz and glamor. Hell, that ring isn’t even you at all. I’m not saying it’s not a nice ring. But it’s just not your type of ring.”

I nodded slowly, “I get what you mean. To be honest, I feel like a fish out of water here. I have people watching me like a hawk. What I look like. How I dress. Even how I sneeze. It’s exhausting. Not to mention the problems with my mom.”

“How is that by the way? Ava told me that she was being an ass again.”

I shrugged. “She’s using again but that was always inevitable. She never wanted to get clean. She loves the high too much.”

“I’m sorry Bri.” Axel pulled me into him and kissed the top of my head. “You don’t deserve this. What you have been through is…rough. But you need to let your mother walk her own path. She isn’t your responsibility anymore.”

I moved in closer to him enjoying his warmth. Axel felt like a safe space. He had always played a protective role over me growing up. It was one of the many reasons I had fallen for him all those years ago. Axel hadn’t felt the same.

But now I saw it as a blessing. Because now I could have moments with him like this.

“Remove your hands from my fiancé before I remove them myself.” Gabriel’s menacing voice came from the left.

I scrambled out of Axel’s hold as if he was on fire and stood to face the man who had refused to look at me for the past four days.

Well, he was looking at me now and if looks could kill, I would be 6ft deep.

Shit fuck shit.

RULE NUMBER 1, YOU’RE MINE

Brianna

“Get out.” Gabriel seethed. “Now.”

Axel stepped up behind me. He was dangerously close. I could practically feel his front against my back. “I take it you’re the fiancé.”

Gabriel’s glare hardened.

Axel let out a little chuckle and I closed my eyes already knowing what was about to happen.

“It's a bit rude to talk to your guests like that, don’t you think?”

“You aren’t my guest. So unless you want a fist in your face I suggest you move away from my fiancé and get the fuck out of my house.”

“Gabriel if you could just—”

Gabriel snapped his gaze to me. “You stay out of this Brianna.”

“If you just listen to me then you will understand that—”

“What’s going on?” Ava walked back into the living room looking between us. “Oh, Mr Farrington.”

“Mr Farrington,” Axel mocked his name, “over here is being a complete ass to Bri. Seriously Bri, how can you want to marry this fucking tool.”

Gabriel took a menacing step toward Axel and I had to walk toward him to stop him in his tracks.

Ava let out a nervous laugh, “I think there has been a huge mixup here. Axel is my brother. We came over for a movie night.”
