I opened the link and found a news article by the Chicago Post. My heart stopped and my breath caught in my lungs. This had to be some kind of nightmare. This cannot be happening. There, in big bold letters read:

Gabriel Farrington’s Druggie Mother-In-Law

There was a picture of my mother who was smiling at the camera looking anything but picture perfect. Her hair was disheveled, you could see the bruises from her injection sites, and her teeth were all cracked and yellow.

There was no denying it. She looked like a junkie.

I knew I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t help myself scroll down the article to see the comments section. Just like I anticipated, every single comment was vile and disgusting.

User14263537: I knew she was trailer trash from the jump. Like how could she be marrying into the Farrington dynasty?

PinkBarbie69: eww this is scary. Is she like on molly or meth?

TheRealestB!tch: proof she is just a gold digging whore. Bring back Adriana!

My stomach churned with each new comment I read. I can’t believe this is happening right now. How had Adriana known? How had she managed to find my mother when I couldn’t find her myself.

Ava: Did you see it?

Bri: I did. This is bad. This is so bad…

Before Ava could reply I had an incoming call from a number I did not recognize.

“Hello?”

“Miss Scott.” I recognized her voice immediately.

“Mrs. Farrington. What a surprise to hear from you.”

“Let’s not beat around the bush shall we. You know why I’m calling you.”

I closed my eyes. This was what I had feared. “Yes, ma’am I do.”

“Is this woman your mother?”

There were two options. I could either lie or I could just face the facts and tell the truth. The former was more enticing than the latter. But I also knew a simple search would link me back to my mother.

“Yes, she is.”

There was silence on the other end of the line. All I could hear were her faint and shallow breaths. This relationship between Gabriel and I was meant to be fake but the feelings I had developed for him were very real. And there was a large part of me that wanted his parents to like me.

I knew it was far from what they wanted their son to have but I cared about him more than words could describe.

I waited longer for her response. Unsure of whether I should apologize for having a drug addict for a mother or to apologize for being the woman her son wanted to fake marry.

“I will take care of this, but I would like you to meet me for tea tomorrow. I’ll send a car around 4. Don’t be late.”

“Yes ma’am,” was all I said.

Then the line went dead. I removed the phone from my ear and let out a shaky breath.

“This cannot be happening right now.” I repeated under my breath. This was what she always did. Whenever things were going well for me she always found a way to ruin it.

“Brianna?”

My back stiffened at the sound of his voice.

I turned around slowly and looked at Gabriel who stood at the elevator entrance. His face was unreadable.
