She closed the door and turned to me. “Nice to see you too, Gabriel.”

“What the fuck is your problem?”

She blinked at me before she turned and walked over to her kitchen. “Can I get you something? Tea? Wine? A reality check?”

“Stop with the games Adriana. I told you to stop messing with Brianna and then you go ahead and sell her private life to the Chicago Post? Even for you that was low.”

“You said I couldn’t talk about you directly. I just gave my opinion on the little whore. Good choice by the way. Druggie in law—I love it.”

“Don’t call her that.” I growled. “Brianna is twice the woman you will ever be.”

She touched the spot right above her heart. “Oh how you wound me, Gabriel.”

“I came here to tell you to stop.”

“I told you what I want Gabriel. But you won’t listen to me.”

“I can never be with you Adriana. What don’t you get?” I seethed. “You are the mother of my child, that is it. There is no relationship between us beyond Michael.”

“You would rather be with that skank than me? You know she can’t live up to the Farrington name. She isn’t even officially a Farrington and the press is already eating her alive. She is uncivilized and uncultured. How do you expect her to be by your side as your equal?”

“Enough!” I stormed over to her, “Brianna is whom I have chosen. She is what I want. She is what I need.”

Adriana scoffed. “What you need? Please, Gabriel. You and I both know she is not the kind of woman that these people expect you to be with. I am the woman who people expect you to be with. I am the woman who is meant to be by your side.”

“And what about Alister?” I said his name like it was poison on my tongue.

“A mistake. Don’t we all make mistakes?” She stepped toward me and placed her hand on my chest. “I’m sorry Gabriel. I have learnt my lesson, now can we stop this trivial little game? I miss you. I miss us.”

She stepped closer, drawing her lips toward mine. So many times I had kissed those lips. So many times I thought they would be the only lips I would ever kiss. Thankfully I wasn’t going to make that mistake again. Before she could get what she wanted I calmly grabbed her by the shoulders.

“I wouldn’t be with you even if you were the last woman on this earth.” I gently pushed her away from me and created the much needed space.

Her eyes went wide as I watched the disbelief and embarrassment wash over her face.

“I warned you that the next time you fuck with her I would ruin you. The only reason I am showing an inkling of mercy is because of our son. Do that again and I will have your ass blacklisted from all of Chicago and beyond.”

“You would really choose her over the mother of your own child. A woman who—”

“Whom I love.” It was the first time I was uttering those words out loud.

“Love?”

“Yes, I love her, Adriana. And there is not a damn thing you or anyone else can do about it. This is your last warning.”

I turned on my heel and walked out of her apartment. As soon as I was back in my car I reached for my phone and dialed the number for my PR manager.

“Yes Gabriel?” Mary answered the phone in two rings.

“I need you to take down that article and wipe out any traces of Brianna’s mother. I also need you to release a statement that discredits everything my ex-wife is saying about my fiancé.”

“Yes sir.”

I needed to get home and see my girl. She was the only thing that could keep me from destroying half this city.

I didn’t know what the next few days were going to look like but at the end of it all, I knew I wanted Brianna by my side.
