“Have you been spying on me?”

“Yes.” I said with zero shame. “I never trusted you with our boy even when we were together. Our story is done now Adriana, and it’s time to move on.”

“No.” She gritted out. “We are made for each other. Why can’t you see that?”

“You cheated on me.”

“IT WAS A MISTAKE!”

I rolled my eyes. “A mistake is forgetting to close the door. A mistake is getting someone’s name wrong. What you did was intentional. And don’t think I don’t know that you went to see Alister while he was in prison. You asked him for money. Was the 100,000 a month I was paying you not enough?”

She clamped her mouth shut.

“When you are ready to discuss Michael’s schedule with me, give me a call. But other than that, don’t contact me. You and I are finished.”

She didn’t say anything but she didn’t need to. She had heard me loud and clear.

I reached for the door knob and turned back to her. “And if I ever see you near Brianna again or if you ever try to hurt her in any way, I’m getting you thrown in a cell.”

With that I walked out of my old family home and into the cool Chicago air.

My phone buzzed and I took it out of my pocket.

Bri: My mom’s in the ICU.

Gabriel: Which hospital?

Bri: Lincoln Memorial.

Gabriel: I’ll be there in ten minutes.

I didn’t waste any time. I got into the car and peeled away from the estate.

CONFESSIONS

Brianna

The machine beeped as my mother’s chest gently rose and fell. I hated hospitals. The last time I had been in one my father had been pronounced dead.

I grabbed onto my mother’s hand for dear life and prayed to the heavens that she would live.

This was not meant to be how her story ended.

I had been called two hours ago to be informed that my mother was in critical condition. This was my worst fear realized.

“Please mom,” I kissed her knuckles. “Please wake up.”

The silent tears rolled down my cheeks as I prayed for some kind of miracle.

They had found her just outside the hospital, unconscious. Apparently she had been on her way here to get medical attention. I wondered if she was coming here for help to get clean.

Chicago Memorial Hospital offered free detox services to those in need. My mother knew about this program because I had placed her in it once before.

“If you can hear me mom, I need you to fight, okay? I need you to fight to stay.” A lump filled my throat stealing the words I was trying to say. “You deserve a second chance at life. And I’m going to be right there with you every single step of the way. You need to wake up for me okay?”

I kissed her knuckles again and lowered my head onto the mattress.
