“That’s not what I said. I might have to leave. That’s not the same as leaving you.”

“Except it is.”

He looked incredibly sad and that broke my heart.

“You saved all this money?”

“I told you. I’ve been saving for years. Since before I met you, even.”

“Nick Nowak. That’s who you’re going to be next?”

“Not for very long. Just until I find someone to sell me another identity.”

“Were you ever going to tell me about any of this?”

“Probably not.”

He stopped looking sad, now he looked angry. As angry as I’d ever seen him.

“Look,” I said. “The only reason I would ever use it, the only reason I would ever leave was if my being here put you in danger.”

“How is that logical?”

“I, I don’t think I should explain that.”

“Why not?”

“Because if you knew everything you’d be in danger.”

“Why can’t I go with you?”

“What?”

“I think that’s the part that hurts the most. If you need to run away, if you need to go into hiding, ask me if I want to go with you.”

“You have a life here. A life you love.”

“I won’t love it without you.”

“And…”

“And? And what?”

“Well, we kind of stand out. I mean, we can change our names, but we’ll still be a half-Asian kid with a white, old man boyfriend.”

“Newsflash, we’re not the only—”

“No, but we’ll be the ones who are new in town and acting suspiciously.”

“You have no imagination. We’ll just tell people my family is Chinese Mafia, and they hate that I’m with you.”

“If that were true, we’d never tell anyone.”

“Normal people don’t think that way.”

“You’re a normal person.”

“I was. Until I met you.”
