“No, he has a brother. Paul, Paulie.”

“Was Paulie older or younger?”

“They were Irish twins. Paulie was about eleven months younger.”

“So, Paulie was in the grade behind you and Pete?”

“No. We were all in the same grade. Pete was a year older. He missed most of the third grade with some sickness… it might have been asthma.”

“You said he was an athlete?”

With a shrug, he said, “Maybe he got over it?”

“So, tell me, who do you think killed Pete?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’ve been in here a long time. You don’t think about it?”

“I think about it all the time. But everyone liked Pete. He was a great guy.”

I wondered about that. Obviously, someone thought he wasn’t that great. “What about Andy Showalter? Do you think he had a reason to kill Pete?”

“I can’t think of anyone who had a reason to kill Pete.”

“Who knew about the two of you?”

“No one. Except Anne.”

“Because Pete didn’t want anyone to know?”

“Neither of us wanted anyone to know. It was the seventies.”

I remembered the seventies very well.

“Could someone have found out?”

“I don’t know.”

“Were you the only person Pete was involved with?”

“I think so.”

“Did he have exes?”

“Not really.”

“Not really? What does that mean?”

“He wasn’t a virgin. I knew that. But I don’t know who he’d been with.”

I studied him for a moment. I guess it made sense. Even though Larry was in love, they’d been stealing time to meet, here and there. Most of that time would have been devoted to sex. They probably didn’t talk a whole lot. On the other hand, Pete might not have wanted Larry to know who he’d been with.

“Okay, I’m going to have to nose around some. I don’t know that I’ll be able to get my boss to take you on until I have more. Do I have your permission to talk to some of the people involved?”

“Who are you going to talk to?”

“Andy Showalter. Anne Whittemore.”
