“What was your relationship to the victim, Pete Michaels?”

“He was my fiancé.”

“When did you become engaged?”

“It was around prom.”

“Did you and Pete go to prom together?”

“No. We had our own event. Just the two of us. It was very romantic.”

“Why is that?”

“Our engagement was a secret. My parents wanted me to go to college. They didn’t even know he was my boyfriend. They’re very strict.”

“You’re not in college now though, are you?”

“When I turned eighteen, I realized I could say no. So that’s what I did. I told my parents ‘No, I don’t want to go to college.’”

“Is that when you told them about you and Pete?”

“No, I didn’t tell them about Pete until after he die—was murdered.”

“Why did you wait?”

“I didn’t want it to seem like I wasn’t going to college so I could be with Pete.”

I wondered if her parents knew she was lying? Were they sitting in the courtroom listening to this? Did it have any connection to reality? Honestly, her parents sounded like Pete’s parents.

“Tell us about your relationship with the defendant, Larry Wilkes.”

“Well, we went through all of school together. I’ve always known him.”

“So you were friends?”

“I guess. For a while.”

“Did something happen?”

“I told him about being engaged to Pete and he got all weird about it. Like I should have known not to do that because Larry liked me too. I mean, it was weird and kind of scary.”

“Did you tell your fiancé about it?”

“Yes.”

“And what did he say?”

“That I shouldn’t worry. That he’d make sure Larry never bothered me again.”

“And did he?”

“He told me he beat Larry up and that Larry would leave me alone.”

“Did he?”

“No. Pete had to beat him up two more times.”

“Then what happened?”
